“Y’know, I’ve been thinkin’,” Dee said one evening when he and Ryo were relaxing in front of the TV, Dick the dachshund draped in his favourite spot across Dee’s bare feet.
Ryo glanced up from the crossword puzzle he was doing during the ad breaks. “That’s never a good sign.”
Dee poked him in the ribs. “Cheeky. I do sometimes come up with a good idea. Asked ya to move in with me, didn’t I?”
“Okay, yes. So, what were you thinking about?”
“The mutt. I’m kinda gettin’ used to havin’ him around, but he’s not ours. Sooner or later, we’ll haveta give him back, and when we do… maybe we could think about gettin’ one of our own. Not the same kind, and not a pup, but a rescue dog. Gotta be a ton of those waitin’ for a good home.”
Setting his crossword puzzle aside, Ryo turned to his partner. “Are you serious? I thought you didn’t like dogs, and if we ever got a pet, you’d want a cat.”
“I still like cats, and they have their advantages, but so do dogs. It’s fun takin’ him to the dog park and stuff, plus he’s good company for whoever’s home when we’re stuck workin’ different shifts.”
“What about having to take him out in all weathers?”
“It’s not that much of a chore. Long as we don’t get somethin’ that needs to be walked for hours every day, can’t see it bein’ a problem.”
“Well, it’s something we can think about, but not while we have our houseguest. We still don’t know how long he’ll be with us; it depends how long it takes Lillian to recover from her broken hip. She’ll be moving to a rehab facility soon.”
“There’s no rush. Just somethin’ to consider for later.”
