According to the forecast, the unseasonably high temperatures and glorious sunshine weren’t going to last much longer, which to Dee meant only one thing.

“Forget about any plans you made for tomorrow,” he’d told his lover last night.

“What? Why?”

Dee had grinned at the adorably confused expression on Ryo’s face. “Because I’m takin’ you to Coney Island for the day. Can’t waste weather like this doin’ chores. The laundry and cleanin’ can wait a day or two. You can’t tell me you wanna spend what might be the last day of really good weather we get this year cooped up indoors.”

Ryo hadn’t been able to argue with that, even though there were piles of laundry needing to be done, along with dusting, vacuuming, and grocery shopping. “Alright, but I’m doing a load of laundry tonight, otherwise we won’t have anything to wear when we’re back at work.”

“Fair enough, we’ll do a couple of loads, just the essentials, but tomorrow’s gonna be strictly a chore-free zone.” The only way to avoid Ryo making a fuss about things not getting done was to set down some rules ahead of time. “We’ll get up
early, go to Anita’s for breakfast so we won’t have any dishes to deal with, then head out to Brooklyn.”

And that’s what they’d done. Now here they were, dressed in jeans and t-shirts, strolling hand in hand along the boardwalk, enjoying the sunshine, a fresh breeze off the water taking the edge off the heat.

Dee drew a deep breath, taking in the aromas of cotton candy, hotdogs, burgers, and other fair foods, the melody from a nearby carousel wafting to him on the breeze.

“This is the life!”

Ryo, looking completely relaxed for once, smiled back at him. “Doesn’t get much better,” he agreed. “I’m glad you suggested this.”

“Gotta soak up the sun while we can. Judgin’ by the long-range forecast, fall is gonna come down on us like a ton of bricks by the weekend. This is one time I’m glad we’re gettin’ two days off midweek instead. Not as busy here as it would’a been last weekend, before school started. Whaddaya wanna do first?”

“Roller coaster.” Ryo’s grin widened. “After that we can get popcorn, and if the queue isn’t too long, maybe ride the Wonder Wheel.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

Heading for the Cyclone roller coaster, they joined the queue.

The End
