“Stupid place to put a grate,” Dee said, scowling as he poked at the offending object with the toe of his boot.
“It’s there so that rainwater drains away,” Ryo pointed out reasonably. “Nobody wants to paddle across a parking lot to get to their car.”
“Then they should’a put in grates with narrower gaps between the bars, or at least somethin’ that can be lifted with a tire iron, instead of settin’ it in concrete so it can’t be moved.”
“That was probably done for safety. Someone takes the grate out as a prank, the next person along could break a leg.”
Dee grumbled at that. “Still should’a fixed ‘em so stuff can’t fall through the gaps.”
Ryo glanced up at his partner from where he was kneeling by the grate. “This would go faster if you’d get out of my light.”
“Fine!” Dee took a step back, dragging their snickering prisoner with him. “Better?”
“Yes, thank you.” Ryo returned to fishing with the bent paperclip fastened to the end of a piece of string.
“Don’t know what you’re laughin’ at,” Dee told the man he and Ryo had just arrested. “It’s your fault I dropped my frickin’ handcuffs!”
