Ryo loved bookshops. Hell, Ryo just loved books, and Dee liked to read too. Maybe not as much as his lover did, but he liked to have a few books around for nights when there wasn’t sport, or anything else of interest, on the TV. Book prices had been going up steadily though, and anyway, the new releases weren’t necessarily what either man was interested in reading, which was why they’d gravitated to the book fair, looking for something to while away the cold winter evenings that would be descending on them soon enough.

Only problem with events like this was that nothing was sorted, except that children’s books were in a separate section. Textbooks mingled with novels, cookery books with travel guides, science-fiction with bodice-rippers; it was one big jumble, so they had to root about among the shelves and boxes, looking for something that might appeal.

Dee had a couple of sci-fi novels tucked under his arm, when he found something that looked like it might be kinda raunchy. He spared a quick glance towards his lover, who was engrossed in a book of cake and cookie recipes he’d unearthed, before picking the book up.

The Nun’s Priest’s Tale. Flipping it open somewhere in the middle, Dee frowned at the text, trying to make sense of it. Nope, not raunchy, as far as he could make out. He wasn’t even sure it was in English. Some words were familiar, but most of it looked like someone had just shoved a bunch of letters together at random.

“What’ve you found?” Ryo asked, coming up behind him. “Something interesting?”

“Somethin’ weird. Not sure what language it’s in though.” Dee showed his partner.

“Looks like old English.” Plucking the slim volume from Dee’s hands, Ryo closed it. “Yep, Chaucer. Had to read some of this in an English Lit class I took.”

“You can read this? You know what it says?”

“A bit, or I could back when I took the class. It’s… Kinda dull, to be honest. Probably the worst thing we studied.”

“Yeah, I’ll take modern English any day.”
