“You are a bare-faced, unrepentant crook, my dear Captain, an extortionist par excellence!” Mondreigh exclaimed, peering down his lengthy nose at Jack, an expression of profound and entirely faked shock on his long face.
Naturally, Jack just laughed. “You say that every time we do business, my friend, and yet you still come straight to me when you have goods to be transported, and you know why. I’m the best there is, and you know your goods are guaranteed to arrive where they’re going on time and intact. You only complain about the cost because you’re trying to guilt me into lowering my prices, thereby raising your profits.”
“Ah, my dear friend, you wound me!” Mondreigh clasped all four hands over the place his heart would have been if he were human. “I have three mates and seventeen children to support!”
“Which would impress anyone who didn’t know that an average family unit on your world typically consists of an octet with upwards of fifty children. Your family is considered embarrassingly small.”
Mondreigh chortled merrily. “This is truth, but my three mates are the finest on my world, each one a veritable gem. To have more would be to deprive my treasures of deserved attention and that I would never do. You should understand, having such a treasure yourself.” Mondreigh nodded towards Ianto. “This is why I trust you, despite your exorbitant prices, dear Jack. You and I, we understand the unparallelled joys and satisfactions of wedding for love rather than for power, wealth, or position.”
“Indeed we do,” Jack agreed, squeezing Ianto’s hand beneath the table. “Why seek more when we’re already so blessed?”
“Precisely. Therefore, I shall pay your vastly inflated charges, that you can provide your mate with all he so richly deserves.”
“Always a pleasure, Mondreigh.”
