“Drop it!”
Dee jerked, hastily putting the warm cookie back on the cooling rack and spinning around with a guilty look on his face.
“Sorry, babe. I couldn’t resist.”
“What?” Ryo turned to his lover in confusion. “Couldn’t resist what?”
“The cookies. I was only gonna sample one, I swear!”
Ryo looked even more confused at that. “Go ahead, I’m not stopping you. I know what you’re like. Just don’t eat them all, okay?”
Now Dee was confused as well. “You told me to drop it!”
“What?” Ryo started laughing. “No, not you, I was talking to the dog! A sock fell out of the laundry basket, and I guess he thought we were playing a game. You didn’t really think…” Ryo trailed off, shaking his head, still grinning.
“So it’s okay if I have a cookie?”
“Didn’t I just say so?”
“Yeah, you did. Thanks, babe.”
“No thanks needed. I made them for us to eat, and they’re always best when they’re fresh from the oven.”
“Still, I appreciate you bakin’ them.”
“That’s good to hear. But Dee?”
“Yeah?”
“For the record, if I say to drop something, I’m not talking to you.”
Dee nodded. “I know that now.”
