Not so long ago, Dee would have never voluntarily spent time with JJ, but thankfully, JJ had finally found true happiness with Drake, so he no longer followed Dee around like a lovesick puppy. These days, Dee considered his former stalker a friend, someone he could turn to for help, especially when it came to surprising his lover.
“I need you to teach me a magic trick.” Dee almost blushed as he made his request. “It’s Ryo’s birthday in a few weeks, and I know what I’m gettin’ him, it’s already on order, but I wanna do somethin’ else for him, somethin’ more romantic than just takin’ him out to dinner. I mean, I’m doin’ that as well, table’s booked and everything, but…” Dee bit his lip.
“But what?”
“I always give him flowers, and this time I thought it would be cool if I produced maybe a rosebud, somethin’ like that, outta thin air.”
“You know magicians don’t really do that, right?” JJ said, smiling. “The fine art of prestidigitation is all about tricking the eyes. No one can pluck something out of nowhere.”
“Yeah, I know that, everything’s hidden somewhere, the hand is quicker than the eye and all that. Could ya teach me though?”
“You mean like this?” JJ waved his hand, and somehow he was suddenly holding a pen. Dee hadn’t seen him pick it up.
“Yes! Exactly like that!”
“Well, I don’t know if I can teach you, but I can try.”
It wasn’t easy, Dee spent countless hours cursing his clumsy fingers. He’d never be as good as JJ, but after several weeks of practice, he could ‘conjure’ a rosebud.
The look on Ryo’s face when, arriving at the restaurant, Dee produced the flower seemingly out of nowhere made all his hard work worthwhile.
