Looking at his battered and exhausted team, Jack hated himself. He’d thought this would be a bit of fun, a team bonding camping trip, a couple of days away from the Hub and the daily grind, but it had turned into the worst kind of nightmare imaginable.
The missing people weren’t the result of alien abductions, the disappearances had nothing to do with the Rift, which meant there had been no reason for Torchwood to get involved. It was a police matter, humans preying on other humans in the most deranged fashion possible, a whole rural village who had turned to cannibalism because, in the words of their leader, it made them happy.
How long had it been going on? How many innocent travellers had been butchered and eaten, hardly more than a stone’s throw from the Welsh capital? And Jack had dragged his team out here to investigate, almost getting them all killed in the process.
There’d been nothing fun about this trip. Gwen had been shot, Ianto had been tenderised, the whole team had been traumatised… It wouldn’t surprise him if he’d lost whatever trust they might have had in him.
He’d never forgive himself for this fiasco.
