“What’re ya doin’?” Dee asked, catching his lover late one night hunched over a bundle of something, peering at it through his reading glasses by the light of the lamp on the end table.
Ryo glanced up, frowning. “Trying to repair my coat.”
“Huh. Thought ya said you were gonna throw it out.”
“I was, but…” Ryo gave a shrug. “It’s only a small hole, and it’s near the bottom, so it shouldn’t be too noticeable. Besides, I like this coat, it’s comfortable, and I’d rather wear an old one for work than the new one I bought. It wasn’t cheap, and I don’t want it getting ruined the next time some idiot starts taking potshots at us. I’m not made of money. Might as well make this one last as a work coat for as long as I can.”
“Yeah, I guess that makes sense.” Dee ambled over. “So, where’s the bullet hole?”
“Right here.” Ryo pointed at a spot maybe three inches above the hem on the lefthand front panel.
Dee leaned closer, squinting. “You’re right, nobody’s gonna notice that. Even knowin’ it’s there, I can barely make out the repair.”
Ryo smiled. “Guess it was worth doing.”
