Taking a cautious sip of the alien drink, Ianto pulled a face, shuddering at the bitter taste that flooded his mouth.
“Ugh!” He reached for his coffee and took a hasty swig, almost burning his tongue in the process. “I thought you said this stuff was popular!”
“It is,” Jack said easily. “I never claimed it tasted good.” He sipped from his own small glass and shuddered. “This is only a year or two old though; usually it isn’t drunk until it’s been aged for fifty or sixty cycles. The ageing process improves the taste a bit, as well as increasing the potency, but if you can face drinking the rest of it, I think you’ll appreciate the effects.”
“It’s not an aphrodisiac, is it?” Ianto eyed his lover warily.
“No, not that I’ve ever heard of. It just…” Jack fumbled for a way of explaining what the drink did. “It opens your mind,” he finished lamely.
“Opens it to what?” Ianto took another sip, shuddering again.
“Everything. The effects won’t be as strong as with the properly aged stuff, but it’s great for language assimilation. You can learn a new language, and memorise it, in just a few hours.”
