Halloween had been fun, taking Mother’s kids trick or treating, with Ryo helping to wrangle the little monsters. They’d even ended up with some candy for themselves, a reward for their efforts, since there were leftovers from what they’d bought to hand out. Buying too much really hadn’t been such a bad idea after all, even if he hadn’t done it on purpose. Dee honestly had forgotten Ryo had already bought some, but it wasn’t as if it would go to waste.
Shoving a few pieces in his coat pocket to snack on during the day, Dee headed out, locking the door behind him. Ryo was already downstairs, having gone ahead to get the car warmed up, so he took the elevator by himself, his mind wandering, not thinking of anything in particular. Then the elevator jolted to a halt on the next floor, the door opened, the light flickered, almost going out for a moment, and Dee’s heart started pounding as a ghost sidled in.
He pinched himself; this had to be a nightmare, there was no way it could be real!
The ghost looked up at him. “WOOOOO!”
“Sorry,” a voice said, and he glanced away from the ghost to see his new downstairs neighbour entering the elevator. “I know spooky season is over, but she’s only five, and she doesn’t want to stop being a ghost yet.” She shrugged as if to say, what’s a mom gonna do? “At least this way she doesn’t make a fuss about going to school.
Dee relaxed. “For a moment there, I thought I must be havin’ a really weird dream.”
“No, you just have weird neighbours.”
“Guess I can get used to sharin’ the elevator with a ghost.” He handed the ghost a piece of candy. “Happy Halloween.”
“Thank you.”
