Getting the roof garden ready for winter was a big job. The greenhouse needed cleaning out and the heater checked, the raised beds, most of them empty now that the vegetables growing in them had been harvested and frozen, had to be dug over, and the vegetables still growing, the sprouts, winter cabbages, and some root crops, needed covering with fleece to protect them from frost.

On top of all that, the drainage and irrigation systems had to be checked, and the pipes insulated to prevent them freezing. Paths wanted sweeping, and there were winter pansies to plant for a splash of colour.

Dee shivered, pulling a woollen beanie down over his ears; Ryo had to be out of his mind, wanting to work outside today. Okay, due to work and wet weather this was the first chance they’d gotten to tackle the gardening, and yes, even though the sky was overcast it wasn’t raining, but it was cold and windy, and Dee would have preferred to stay inside with a hot drink and some mindless TV.

“We’re gonna freeze our asses off, ya know that don’t ya?”

Ryo just laughed. “I don’t know why you’re bothering to wrap up. You won’t be cold for long.”

“Wanna bet?”

“Sure. Ten bucks says in less than half an hour, you’ll be complaining about being hot and the coat and hat will come off.”

“I’ll take that bet, ‘cause I’m gonna win.”

“We’ll see.”

Twenty minutes later, Dee was sweltering, all but dripping with sweat; he couldn’t imagine why he’d ever thought it was cold out. Shoving the beanie in his pocket, he pulled his coat off and draped it over the bench.

Ryo hadn’t been wearing a coat or a hat, but he was sweating too, and had pushed the sleeves of his sweatshirt up, leaving his forearms bare. He grinned at his lover. “Told you.”

Dee huffed. “Guess this means I owe ya ten bucks.”

“That was the bet.” Ryo straightened up, wiping the sweat from his face with the back of his hand, leaving a streak of dirt behind. “You can buy the drinks the next time we go out.”

“It’s a deal.” Picking up the fork again, Dee got back to digging, suddenly glad the weather was so cold. Maybe now he’d taken his coat off, the chill air would keep him from overheating. Gardening was hard work.

The End
