‘Pedal power!’ Ryo thought, grinning. His car might be in the shop, undergoing repairs, but that didn’t mean he had to resort to using the subway or catching a bus for his commute. At least not while the weather stayed dry.
The chill of the fall morning didn’t bother him, he knew he’d soon warm up. Fortunately, he only lived a few miles from the precinct, and most of the distance was along level roads. As long as he avoided potholes and watched out for careless drivers, both of which he had to do when driving, he’d be fine.
Bikky had already left to catch the school bus, so now it was Ryo’s turn to head out. He slipped into his backpack, carrying his lunch, his bicycle lock, and a change of clothes, strapped his helmet on, and swung his leg over the saddle.
The main downside of cycling to work was breathing traffic fumes, but he could avoid some of the worst stretches by cutting through backstreets and alleys that weren’t as convenient in a car. There were even cycle lanes in places, which helped. He soon worked up a sweat, pedalling steadily, gliding around corners, only getting off when it was easier and quicker to cross busy streets at a pedestrian crossing rather than trying to manoeuvre through heavy traffic.
The best thing about cycling wasn’t just the exercise, or that it was an environmentally friendly form of transportation. In rush hour, it was often quicker than driving!
