Guilt swamped Buffy. Kendra was dead, Giles was missing, probably taken by Angel’s minions, and two of her friends were injured, Xander with a broken arm, and Willow… Her best friend, not to mention her last hope of re-souling Angel and preventing the coming apocalypse, was concussed and in a coma. If she’d only killed Angel when she’d had the chance, none of this would be happening.
This shouldn’t have been their fight; her friends were only in it because they’d wanted to help her. Giles understood the danger they were all putting themselves in, but he was her Watcher, so it was technically his job, and Kendra had been a Slayer, always destined to die young, but the others… There was a reason Slayers didn’t usually have friends. Normal humans were too vulnerable, they didn’t have the strength and skills that Slayers had, or the accelerated healing.
Willow looked so small and pale, lying in the hospital bed. Seeing her there reminded Buffy of the way her friend had supported her when she’d been in hospital with a bad case of the flu a few months ago. Now she should be returning the favor, and instead she had to go kill her ex-boyfriend before he managed to have the entire world sucked into Hell. Literally.
It hurt to walk out of the hospital, not knowing if she’d ever see any of her friends again. Hospitals, like schools, were public buildings, so vampires didn’t need permission to enter them. She was leaving the people she cared about unprotected, and yet the only way to keep them safe was to confront the monster Angel had become, and end him for good. If she failed, then no one would survive.
Her duty as the Slayer had never been so heavy a burden.
