“Maybe she’s not human at all,” Dee muttered to his lover, eyeing the expressionless woman at the cash register as the queue they were in inched closer to her.
“What d’you mean?” Ryo frowned at the other man.
“Look at her. She hasn’t cracked a smile in all the time we’ve been waitin’, barely says a word. Maybe they’ve switched out the human cashiers and replaced ‘em with robots, or androids. Look human enough, but inside it’s all a bunch of wires and circuits.”
“Dee!” Ryo’s frown deepened. “That’s mean. There’s only a few days until Christmas, she probably has a ton of stuff she neds to do, but she’s stuck at that register for hours at a time, dealing with a bunch of bad-tempered, rude, impatient shoppers. She’s just doing whatever it takes to get through her shift. Are we any different when we’re dealing with a rough day?”
“You’re right. We think we have it rough some days, but at least we can just walk away for a few minutes and gather ourselves. Cashiers just gotta sit there until someone comes to take over from ‘em. Wonder how long she’s been there, checkin’ people through. Maybe stores like this really should think about replacin’ cashiers with androids or somethin’.”
“They already have. A lot of places these days it’s all machines for self-checkout.”
“Yeah, I hate those. I’d rather talk to a person.”
“Me too,” Ryo agreed.
When it got to be their turn to check out, both men made a point of smiling at the woman, thanking her, being polite and friendly, hoping she didn’t have too much longer on her shift, and the smile they got in response was well worth it. They left the store knowing they’d brightened her day by making her feel appreciated.
