Sometimes Jack wondered if assembling his own team after Alex’s death had been the right thing to do. It had been difficult keeping on top of everything alone; the Rift was unpredictable, spitting out objects and lifeforms whenever it felt like it, and dealing with more than one Weevil at a time seldom ended well for either party, but at least he’d only been putting his own life at risk. He’d managed, most of the time, even if it had meant dying more often, but no matter how unpleasant that might be, he always came back. Ordinary humans didn’t have that advantage.
Had it been selfish of him to make things easier on himself by employing more people? He’d welcomed the company, and some of the people he’d recruited, people like Toshiko, had been talented in ways he simply wasn’t. On the other hand, if he’d continued on alone, he wouldn’t have needed to recruit a medic to take care of his team’s injuries.
In the end, even if not directly, he’d been responsible for the death of every person he’d brought onto his team. If not for him, they might have enjoyed long, fulfilling lives instead of dying young.
