A/N: Triple drabble.
“Don’t fiddle with those, Bikky,” Ryo told his young foster son. “Handcuffs aren’t toys. The last thing I need is to find you’ve accidentally cuffed yourself to something and lost the keys.”
He realised he was going to have to set some ground rules around the apartment now that he was responsible for the boy, and the first thing on the list needed to be making sure Bikky didn’t touch anything he shouldn’t. Ryo already kept his service weapon locked away when he was home, but until now, he hadn’t considered the potential dangers of his other police equipment.
“Sorry, Ryo.” Bikky put the handcuffs back on Ryo’s nightstand. “Did you ever use them on anyone?”
Such innocence, despite everything he’d been through in his short life. Ryo wished he could shelter the boy from all the bad things in the world, but he knew that would only leave his son unprepared. Besides, he’d promised himself he would never lie to his son; he owed Bikky the truth in all things, no matter how harsh that truth might sometimes be.
So he nodded, expression serious. “Yes, I have. Many times. You see, when the police arrest someone, even if they’re not completely certain that person is guilty of the crime they’re being arrested for, it’s important to restrain them so they can’t hurt themselves or anyone else. We do our best not to hurt anyone, especially if the suspect comes with us quietly, but the handcuffs make our job a little bit easier and safer. If we didn’t use them, suspects might be able to overpower us and take our weapons, but with their hands cuffed behind their backs, they can’t.
“Oh.” Bikky looked thoughtful. “Do you like being a cop?”
“I like helping to keep good people safe, yes.”
