Sitting with Angel in the cemetery at the edge of town, Buffy gazed up at the stars overhead, hard, and bright, and twinkling. She sighed.
“Nights like this are so beautiful. Sometimes I wish we could just stay here, like this, forever.”
Looking down at her, Angel met her eyes and smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkling up. “You’d get bored.”
Buffy smiled. “You’re right, I would, I’m Action Girl. But this is still nice, for a while.” She turned her attention back to the stars. “Do you think we’ll ever get out there, among the stars? Humans I mean, not us personally. Will people, hundreds or even thousands of years from now, ever build spaceships that can travel across the universe, visit other planets, maybe meet aliens? I mean, earth can’t be the only inhabited planet.”
Angel leaned his head back, looking up at the night sky. “I don’t know. Maybe. There are other dimensions, so why not other planets and other… people?”
“Maybe there’s a world out there where vampires could walk around in daylight without bursting into flames,” Buffy mused.
“Perhaps there is.” Angel turned his head to press a kiss to Buffy’s hair. “But even if there was, I wouldn’t want to live there if you weren’t there too.”
“I won’t live forever, Angel.” Buffy shifted around to face him. “Someday I’ll be gone, but you’ll still be here. You could live… well, you could be undead, for thousands of years. Promise me, if humans ever go out into space and you get the chance to, you’ll go, you’ll see all the other worlds out there.”
“Why?”
“Because I know I’ll never have that chance. Humans only live a few decades, and Slayers have even shorter lives, but through your memories, I could live forever.”
