The weekend before last, my parents visited. My father had been wanting to have a long conversation with me for a while, and mentioned (in that Way that parents have) that he'd really appreciate it if I found time this summer. My parents had to pick my sister up from her job at a summer camp in MA anyway, so they drove up to visit ( Read more... )

I'm glad the family stuff didn't end up being too overly stressful for you, although having to go to the beach on top of it probably didn't make life any easier.

Out of curiosity, how do running tops hold up if you actually go swimming in them? (For what it's worth, my butch swimwear is usually just board shorts and a sleeveless rash guard.)

I don't actually know, after all that, the furthest I got was wading a bit. After I try it, I'll let you know! Maybe there's still time in the summer to go to a place with water slides.

In other questions, "rash guard"?

I am imagining a soldier assigned to protect a particular thing, but who takes too many risks.

I suppose I could just google it, but that's no fun :)

Your understanding of "rash guard" made me laugh, and think of the Xanth books.

When speaking of swimwear, a rash guard is generally a swimming-appropriate (quick-drying?) shirt w/or w/o some amount of sleeves, worn over a bathing suit to protect one from sunburn or irritation. I've seen them discussed in the modesty communities as a way of staying covered up while swimming. You could possibly just wear one w/ board shorts w/o needing a bathing suit underneath.

You coming down B'more/NOVA way anytime soon? I'd love to meet the "new" you.

first: YAY for it not being as stressful as it could be! That's awesome :).

second: i haven't worn a one-piece bathing suit since i was a kid. i've preferred nylon (board) shorts and a sports bra or bikini top ever since. in fact, a sports bra and work pants are pretty practical for moving boxes / apartments / burning man gear / etc in hot weather, too.

bathing suits are stupid and fit no one. i swearz. or else we're ALL funny shaped (possible).

Are sports bras actually appropriate to wear to the beach? Or only the set of sports bras that don't look like underwear?

I've stripped down to a sports bra at silks, and been mostly okay with it, but I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be with that at a more public place. Or at a more public place, with my parents.

Still, something to consider.

Also, argh clothing makers for apparently only making bathing suits for fictional characters.

sports bras cover WAY more than a bikini top, for whatever THAT'S worth.

i wore sports bras w/boxer shorts for drum corps' practices, for whatever that's worth.

i have 2-3 sports bras that only look slightly like 'bras' and more like 'crop tops.'

they cover TONS more than my bikini top!

still, yeah, bathing suits suck.

Are tankinis still in fashion? Something that worked for me when swimsuit makers expected more cleavage than I have was Buy tankini, Cut small hole, Remove entirely frivolous underwire, Repair hole.
