Imagine, for a moment, that you are in a city - Santa Cruz, if you know where you are (or even if you don't). And there are zombies. Maybe you know about the Rising, and the Kellis-Amberlee virus that has caused the dead to rise. Maybe you know the danger you're in right now. Or maybe you have no idea where you are or how you got there

Which it is, proven as the bike whips around the corner opposite the corner the zombies are beginning to shamble around, towards the sound of screaming.
Shaun comes screeching to a halt and takes in the situation with a few choice words of his own. Of course, an unarmed, unarmored teenage girl, and a horde of zombies in Santa Cruz. He's singularly grateful that he flat-out refused to take cameras with him, since that meant he wasn't going to be the front page story for After the End Times in an hour or two.
More important things to worry about, idiot,
"Right," he mutters. Then, louder, "Hey, kid, get your ass over here if you have an invested interest in living!" He swings his rifle up and takes aim at one of the faster zombies heading towards her. Two shots, and it's ( ... )

She shuts her mouth as quickly as she can when she realizes she's being spoken to. Holden's not dumb, and she realizes in an instant that this guy is her ticket to, remaining alive. She does pause for a split second, to watch the zombie go down. She realizes that pausing is stupid, and a waste of their time. There are going to be more pauses that are stupid, as she charges into the street without looking both ways (something she probably should have taken a moment to do, but what the hell). She's not stupid, really she isn't, but in times of panic, weird things come out of people's mouths. It's just shock, she'll swear up and down later. She's really not that dumb ( ... )

Go easy on the kid, she's scared, George chides him.
"Yeah, well, she shouldn't be out here in the first place," Shaun answers under his breath. Best not to scare the kid away by being too crazy, but... "Look, kid, just get on the bike behind me and hold on to my waist."
He doesn't wait for her to follow instructions before pulling a grenade off his belt and tossing it into the horde.

For now, he's just going to come around the corner and screech to a stop.
Oh, shit.
"You said it, George." Shaun pulls out George's favourite .40 and takes aim. "Hey, kid, wanna step away from the zombies?"

"Those are zombies?" he asks dumbly before everything sinks in. Stepping away from the zombies. Yeah. Good idea. He moves away--not quickly, because, y'know, in his brain (which is definitely not working up to par, but the beating he took before he was swept up by the Rift may have something to do with that) moving away too quickly would mean the possibility of raising alarm and starting a small riot of zombies. But he is moving away.
His head hurts. Well. Mostly his face, from getting the shit kicked out of it. He blinks at Shaun blankly. He knows what happened to him, and because he knows that, he also knows that he has nowhere to go and no idea what to do next, and apparently now there are zombies. "...You wouldn't happen to know the direction of Child Services, would you?" he asks finally.

"Look, can we just get out of here first and worry about other things once we're not about to be eaten?"
