I really suspect it had more to do with marketing it as a movie about the girl rather than the horse.

Your points are well taken, especially abut the marketing--but a Spanish name on a cowboy's horse is a little different. It's the expected sort of name, evoking the West, instead of apparently random Spanishness :-)
