This is one of my favorite books of all time, so i was rather expecting not to like it.
visually, the film was great. i really liked the very last shot. a lot of the rooms seemed exactly how i'd pictured them while reading the book.
i thought the songs were really really good too [yay, Danny Elfman]
there were a few unexpected and amusing little things [like the narrator] that were quite enjoyable.
but, i feel terrible for johnny depp. willy wonka was awful. i was uncomfortable watching him throughout the entire film. he was weird, for sure, but not in the right way at all. i mean, the kids were making fun of him and he never seemed in control of the situations and he made me so nervous.
and seriously, fuck the screenwriter for the wonka backstory. i realize the justification of that was to explain why he was such a freak, but it would have been unnecessary if they hadn't felt the need to make him a total lunatic. he's supposed to be jolly!and old!and weird but not in the imafuckingpsycho way.
and charlie refusing the factory!!! what the hell.
i know its just an adaption to the book, but i dont think it worked at all. i hate it when people stand up for obviously bad things just because they like the people in it, or the directors. i really like tim burton and johnny depp, and i still thought it was terrible.
i am, however, looking foward to the corpse bride.
