So, just let me add my own voice to the displeasure at the eminent domain decision of the Supreme Court that has set the precedent for eminent domain to extend to include commercial enterprize within "public use

The development is actually a good one .. well, relatively speaking. It really will benefit the community and should do quite a bit to improve the economy and built fabric of the city. But that only makes it seem all the more inocuous, and thus all the more dangerous. It is easy to justify it in this case, but the means are just not appropriate.
In a way, this is partly the fault of the developers. If they were, on the whole, more discerning, better community members and just built better stuff, there wouldn't be such distrust of them and they'd stand a better chance of actually convincing people that the development is good. But instead, they have bought themselves some more "good government" so that they don't have to bother being better.
I just cannot wrap my mind around the idea of a Christian Left *or* Right. Christianity simply does not fit the ideologies of the either the Left or the Right, and toeing either the Left or Right ideology is to abandon Christian principles in some way or another.
The politicization of Christianity as it is occurring in this country is probably the biggest danger that it is facing .. even greater than revisionism or population attrition.
Billy Joe Armstrong (lead singer of Green Day) makes the point that every dollar that we spend is a vote .. a vote in favor of the system and companies that produced whatever it is that we are buying. I don't get how a dumb punk-rock singer can understand the power of using captialism itself to fight the injustices caused by capitalism through conscientious consumerism and the boycot while it seems that the majority of Americans can not or will not.
And yet we consume. That's one of the reasons that I like terms like conscientious consumerism. The apparent dichotomy in the term creates pause for thought.

On a related note, I'm suddenly curious about whether this will have a big impact on my city since it is going through such major changes with a Hilton Convention Center having just been erected in the oldest and most southern part of the city and a huge medical facility and offices going up in the northern-most part of the city. I wonder what will happen to the older housing down there now that the city is thriving with new commerce in these areas and the companies will have the go-ahead to screw people out of their homes.

Luckily, you live in a politically aware area. It is more difficult to get things past the people there. Watchdogs will keep things to the letter of the law .. the letter now not really being all that different than the way things were done before.
The problem that we are facing is that the line has been moved. What had been the blurring of the old line by power, money and influence is the new line. Now power, money and influence can go about blurring that line further out.

Unfortunately, the case that it was decided on seems to really be in the best interest of the community. From what I have seen, it is a development that I would generally get behind. The problem is the means being pursued, the precedent that this sets for projects that are really only in some people's best interest and not the community's. Eminent domain has long since been used in this manner, private property taken for the development of other private property that is seen to serve the community in some way. However, since it was a stretch of the law, it was done sparingly and judiciously. But now it is clearly constitutional.
But, the battle isn't over, and there could be some satisfying irony to be had.

I think he's a bit disrespectful and even hostile to Catholic belief. Isn't that somewhere on the info page, that they have to be courteous to things catholic?
