it's either his fan or his harddrive, imho. i'd shut it down and get it checked ASAP. if it's a bad fan, you could melt the motherboard. if it's a bad harddrive, you may not be able to recover data if you let it go on long enough.

I know Daniel's Alienware recently had some similar problems invovling his graphics card and fan that lead to getting a new mother board and other things so I would take it to a professional computer person to get it checked out.
