"How are you doing?"

Today I exchanged greetings with several people that I recognized while walking around campus. Three different people said, "How are you?" I said, "Good. How about you?" And they all didn't answer and just kept walking. Am I not supposed to ask people how they are after they ask me how I am? Did they not even pay attention to my answer? Am I ( Read more... )

"How are you?" is just like "What's up?" which doesn't always calls for an answer, but merely an acknowledgement...

Yeah I totally know what you mean and I always seem to answer "good" or "fine", even though I might not be. With those passerbys there's just not enough time to say "I think I am feeling a bit mundane, a little tired, and really routine, but hey what do you care you just want me to answer the damn question."
