Paris does smell terrible. I avoid it if possible. You should hit Lyon. It's beautiful. Good food, good wine, doesn't smell bad, nice people, Roman amphitheater still in use for concerts and movies, nighttime boat rides down the rivers when the aqueducts and the cathedrals are lit up (and they even have a mini-Eiffel Tower!)
