Kashiwagi and Hanako are very close friends. Kashiwagi acts like the cool aunt Hanako never had, they make friendly jokes at each other's expense and try to pick up boys on Saturday nights (try being the key word here).

So when Hanako's pet dies, Kashiwagi is there to comfort her even if it means severely inconveniencing herself.
