It’s always been there, Baekhyun thinks. The undeniable connection that can only be explained by believing in the existence of soulmates. That it’s possible for two people to just have this magnetic pull towards each other, an unspoken understanding, a red string. It’s always been there, but they were both afraid to dive into the unknown.

It was early 2011 when he was informed that he would be a part the 12-member boy group that the company was debuting the following year. He had immediately felt like he wouldn’t belong at all. Sure, he played well with other trainees, he owed that to his naturally bubbly personality. But being thrust into a group that had been training together for a year, some of them being together for much longer, made him feel like an outsider, an intruder. He knew he should not think of it that way. There was another boy with him after all, Kim Jongdae, whose voice was all too beautiful and mesmerizing. They had passed the auditions together, and although they were initially pitted against each other, Jongdae ended up becoming the closest trainee to him. He had a lot of worries, but he didn’t want to burden Jongdae, who had bigger problems to face, since the latter was going to debut in China even though the only Mandarin he knows is ‘xie xie’. So he kept all his troubles to himself, and the days that led to his first practice with the group and his move to the group’s dorm had been a pain. His insecurities were eating him up, and he just felt alone.

But it was as if the universe had heard his troubles, because then comes Park Chanyeol, crashing into his life in the most literal sense. Falling on top of someone usually isn’t a good first impression, but the angry words didn’t come, only a bright, blinding smile came. He couldn’t help but stare, and the boy just stared right back at him. Even then there was already this tension, an unexplainable feeling. But it was only their first meeting, so he couldn’t exactly point out what it was. He’s not sure if Chanyeol had felt it then, but it was the prelude to something.

They laughed off the incident to get rid of the awkward tension, and soon enough they became inseparable. He knew for a fact that despite his insecurities and self-issues, he still manages to project a bright and charming personality. He’s a jokester, and he somehow makes people comfortable around him easily. But Chanyeol was different. Chanyeol was so much more. Chanyeol was charismatic, exuding this certain aura that would make any person attracted to him. He was confident too, despite being told blatantly in practice that he had two left feet, that he simply couldn’t dance. He only smiled it off, saying he’ll just practice harder and become better. Chanyeol was happiness personified. And his contagious smiles could lift up anyone’s spirits. He wasn’t perfect, but his charms overshadow his flaws.

Chanyeol was like a flame, and Baekhyun was a moth. He was attracted, enticed, and intrigued.

~~~~~~
Baekhyun is not okay. His head is spinning, and he’s feeling nauseous to the point wherein he might just start throwing up. But he can’t say that he’s not okay, because they’re in the middle of one of the last practices before their debut stage. And he doesn’t want to be the reason why they’ll have to postpone it.
I’m okay, he tells himself like a mantra.
They’re on a 10-minute break, and the other members are sprawled on the floor, sharing mindless conversations and playful banter. Usually, he’d be in the middle of it all. But right now, he’s using all his might to keep himself together. He hasn’t been this sick in a very long time, but he woke up that morning feeling a lot more out of it than he usually is after a rigorous day of practice. His sweat is cold too, and he thinks he also might have a fever.
He looks across the room, and he sees a pair of eyes trained on him. He suddenly feels conscious upon realizing that Chanyeol had been eyeing him for quite some time. They’ve been hanging out a lot, and he knows that Chanyeol is someone he can confide in. But he’s never been fond of showing other people his weaknesses. And at this point, he really feels like his body is giving up on him.
His eyesight is slowly blurring, and he feels as if he’s losing his grip on his consciousness. He leans against the wall to keep his balance. And it’s times like this when he wonders if all of this hardships will be worth it. He’s been wondering for a long time, and it’s keeping him awake at night. Would he’d be good enough to grasp people’s attentions in a group of 12? Would he be good enough to contribute to the group’s success? Will he be able to handle pressure from everyone?
It’s true though, that he was the one who chose this life. He could’ve gone to college like the rest of his high school friends, but he chose to be a trainee at the top company who had a notorious training system. Some of his friends urged him to try out for other companies, but by then he already had set his mind into getting into SM. And that he did. Everyone was surprised when he got the go signal to debut in a year, and he was too. A lot of people had congratulated him for this feat, but there was too much pressure. He wanted to be better, and that want had turned him into a person who had completely forgotten to take care of himself.
A tap on his shoulder jolts him out of his thoughts, and he’s greeted with a pair of fairy-like eyes filled to the brim with worries and questions.
“Baek, are you okay?”
“I am,” is what he wanted to say, but instead he shakes his head, finally letting his guard down, accepting the fact that he’ll only wear down even more and eventually break if he keeps being stubborn.
~~~~~~
The cheers and screams are still reverberating in his ears, and he feels pure euphoria in his heart. The showcase had been successful. It wasn’t perfect, but it felt amazing, to him at least. Being able to share his talent to the world had always been his dream, and now he’s a step closer to reaching the dream.

He still feels the adrenaline rushing through his veins - it’s only been two hours since after all. But he knows when he gets down from the high, he’ll feel the exhaustion. But he can’t have time to feel tired when they’re heading to the airport to catch a flight to China.

They were given an hour and a half to celebrate with their families before their flight, and he’s glad he was able to share his happiness with his family. But immediately after, they were herded into two vans headed for the airport.

He’s currently seated at the back with Kyungsoo on his left and Chanyeol on his right. Kyungsoo is curled up to himself, his head leaning on the window of the van. Chanyeol, on the other hand, is awake. His eyes are trained on the busy streets outside, a smile is playing on his lips.

Chanyeol’s family had been the most vocal about their support for their son and the entire group. He already met Chanyeol’s parents before. They’re both very bright and outgoing people, and Chanyeol takes after the them both. Baekhyun fondly remembers Mrs. Park inviting all twelve of them for dinner the day after their debut date was announced. She treated them to a full meal, making sure all of them were fed fully, regardless of their She treats all of them like her sons, and he gladly accepts the warmth.

The smile on Chanyeol’s lips is infectious, and he doesn’t realize he’s smiling too until Chanyeol notices him staring.

“Baek?”

He immediately looks away, but he can feel Chanyeol placing a warm palm on top of his. He feels the happiness and warmth almost immediately, and to him, it’s something new, but it’s not unwelcome. It’s different, but he’s willing to accept it.

“I’m so happy, aren’t you?”

Chanyeol’s voice hints anticipation and excitement, and he can feel himself being affected and infected with every single thing the boy does.

“I am. I really really am.”

The more time they spent together, the more obvious it became. It started with the little things, like how they can immediately sense the other’s mood - happy or side, excited or tired. After a few months, they could even finish each other’s sentences and communicate through body language alone.

His problems were thrown temporarily to the back of his mind, and somehow he feels a lot happier. He had a companion, a confidant, but he can’t help but think he wants something more.

When he started as a trainee, they were briefed early about the entire life of an idol in an idol group. He’s watched enough of Super Junior to know that skinship is a huge factor in terms of interactions of the members within a group. It was a questionable practice to him. Being asked to stage affection had been a trivial idea for him, but he knew he doesn’t have much say in it.

The fans had already paired up the members, and the company knew of course.

At first he felt super awkward about faking affection with Chanyeol. He’s always been a firm believer of genuinity. He thrives in the authenticity of words and actions. Because he doesn’t want to deceive people and make them believe in the make-believe. He wants people to believe in what is real. He wants them to see the real him, to love the real him.

And he knows Chanyeol feels the same way.

Their first few public interactions have been subtle. Just a few touches and hugs here and there. But the responses were heard by SM, and they have been instructed to amp up the fanservice. At first, he frowned upon the idea of using affection as a way to heighten the media play, but again he can’t do anything else but follow the strict instructions. It had been really burdensome, because they’re supposed to do what is asked of them without fail. He feels guilty for feeding fans something unnatural.

Chanyeol was tasked to initiate the skinship. It was how it went, and he was only tasked to reciprocate. But at some point, the displays of affection started to happen spontaneously. He couldn’t exactly pinpoint what it is, but they’re something about Chanyeol’s brightness that made him so comfortable with interacting.

Chanyeol exudes this warmth that calls for company. The other members have always talked about how easy it was for Chanyeol to find connections with other people. That it’ll be easy for him to make you comfortable being around him all the time. He’s brutally honest with himself and the members. And his honesty, although for good intentions, is usually judged by the people around him who don’t get the chance to get to know him..

And this warmth had made the show of affections too easy. Their friendship has helped too, making it natural and very easy.

It’s been awhile since they’ve been given free time. While most of the members decided to stay in and sleep, Chanyeol decided for him. Something he’s surprisingly very comfortable with.

“Thanks for coming with me,” Chanyeol whispers as they come to a stop, reaching their destination.

He simply smiles, because what else could he say? He always lets Chanyeol bring him places, because the other is far more adventurous than he is. He admires how Chanyeol can find happiness in the simplest of things. He admires how Chanyeol never seems to run out of new things he wants to try. He admires how Chanyeol just never stops trying to do things to better himself. He admires how happy Chanyeol is, and how he maintains that happiness by taking away the negativity in his life and sharing that happiness to everyone. But most of all, he admires how much Chanyeol loves his family.

And Chanyeol bringing him to visit Viva Polo to witness this fills his heart with the kind of warmth that you only get from being in the vicinity of overflowing love.

When they arrive, Mrs. Park has a bright smile on her face, and he can’t help but smile too. The mother and son pair hug, and he doesn’t feel like he’s intruding a special moment, because soon enough Mrs. Park is pulling him in for a hug, and somehow it feels like home.

Things aren’t always easy. At some point they realize that they have so many differences as well. They fight, and sometimes it gets out hand, and they end up forgetting what they were fight about in the first place. Sometimes it’s hard to understand, because the way the fight isn’t the way people who are “just friends” fight. The members even start calling them the old married couple.

When they think about it deeply, they truly have this connection that they don’t have with the other members. It’s incomparable and irreplaceable. They’re lucky to have each other, because not everyone in this world find the person who will complement them the way yin complements yang. They’re two very individual people, but a red string binds them. They don’t complete each other, but instead they help each other become better people. They nurture each other’s talents and personalities. It’s a partnership set by the universe and strengthened by fate.

And right now, in a waiting shed at a busy street in Barcelona, does he realize how lucky he is to have found Chanyeol.

He takes a quick glance at the boy beside him - the same boy who was there beside him through the tough times in his life, who never judged him for the decisions he made, the promises he broke, and the words he left unsaid.

He remembers how far they’ve come. He remembers every single thing Chanyeol has done for him - from cooking and taking care of him when he’s sick to being there to remind him that he will always believe in himself because only then will people start believing in him.

And he’s always grateful to Chanyeol - for believing in him even when he’s not ready to trust himself yet.

He will keep the treasures they’ve made, the memories they’ve shared. He will keep them in his heart, because even if time gets the best of them, even if his mind starts to forget, his heart never will.

He’s not sure what this is. He’s not sure what they are. But one thing’s for sure, Chanyeol is his by his side, and there’s nothing more he can ask for.
