summary: If you asked Kyungsoo what he wants for Christmas, he'd say sleep and not Byun Baekhyun.
author's notes: thank you for this opportunity!! this turned out a little angsty than i wanted it to be. it's so rushed and unbetaed because of my stupid work schedule and procrastination. anyways, have yourself a very merry (and baeksoo-filled) christmas and happy holidays! enjoy this fic and the rest of the fics! :)
.'> “There better be a good reason why you're calling me at 8 in the morning on the first day of my Christmas break,” Kyungsoo barks into the phone, half shielding his eyes from the despicable sunlight wielding through the window panes.
There are dust particles swirling in the rays of the light casting upon his blankets and the four walls of his bedroom. He feels the cold tickling his toes peeking beneath the blankets, feels the wintry air settling in the space between his toes. Kyungsoo scrunches his nose and immediately retreats his feet back underneath the warmth of his blankets.
“I need your help,” He hears Minseok say on the other side of the line, exhaustion laced in his voice. He entertains himself in wonderment about what exactly does Minseok need from him, what kind of favour he's about to ask for but for now, all Kyungsoo could think of is the exhaustion slipping into his bones and wrapping tight veins around them. Kyungsoo could feel the bags weighing under his eyes, and he wants nothing more than to return to sleep to make up for all the late nights finishing and perfecting his music compositions for his final exam of the semester.
Minseok attempts to explain his intent further, “you see... Jongin's in bed and-”
“And you're in bed with him,” Kyungsoo continues for the elder, not missing the way Minseok sputters in abashment and surprise at Kyungsoo's bluntness. He stifles a yawn, unable to feel the need to apologise or mention that it's a joke.
“Kyungsoo no,” Minseok says in exasperation, he must have known that Kyungsoo is not going to make it easy for him. It's the first day of his Christmas break, of course Kyungsoo is allowed to be a bit merciless, especially going through an entire month of racking through his brains and searching for a spark of inspiration for his final exam. Kyungsoo hears Minseok sigh into the phone.“Jongin's sick,” he says with a tone of finality, “and-”
“I'm coming over in half an hour,” Kyungsoo replies before hanging up the phone, not even letting Minseok finish the end of his sentence.
He presses the heels of his palms against his eyes, willing the sleep away, and cracks his neck for better measure. Kyungsoo stares out of the windows, witnessing children run around the living room in the apartment across his with a Christmas tree put up by the window and he wonders if this Christmas would be better than the last.
-
Jongin has a fever, he lays in his bed with his blankets strewn all over him and Kyungsoo sits by his bedside. Beads of perspiration flow down his temples and his skin is sticky and burning hot like a furnace when Kyungsoo presses the back of his hand against Jongin's neck to feel his temperature. Minseok sits on the corner of the bed, concern written all over his frown and the anxious tapping of his fingers against his knee.
“How long have you been sick for?” Kyungsoo asks, eyes scanning the colour of Jongin's face. His skin is paler, his lips are dry and his nose is beet red, running. The boy is sick without a doubt and Kyungsoo has to stop himself from scolding the younger for being so careless about his own health. In all of the years that Kyungsoo has been best friends with Jongin, he has never seen the younger put in the attention he has on his own work on himself which makes him vulnerable to sicknesses and pain.
Kyungsoo seems to always be there with his first aid kit, ready to patch Jongin back to normal.
Jongin sniffs, replying Kyungsoo's question, “a while.” At his answer, Kyungsoo narrows his eyes and turns around to eye the Twilight movie box set on the table. He, then, sends a glare in Minseok's direction who merely shrugs with all the helplessness in the shake of his shoulders.
Kyungsoo retrieves his hand back and grabs a few tissues to shove in Jongin's face. The younger accepts it with a grateful nod, wiping away at his nose.
“So you need me to sit in for you at your job?” Kyungsoo asks rhetorically and Jongin answers him with a nod. There's a hesitant pause as his eyes wander off to Minseok momentarily before shifting his focus back on Kyungsoo. Kyungsoo doesn't miss the look of fear and perplexity on Jongin's features, the curiousity is further embedded in the crease between Kyungsoo's eyebrows.
“What's going on?” Kyungsoo notices the looks Jongin is sharing with Minseok, like he's trying to work something out with the elder. Kyungsoo raises an eyebrow at Minseok, expecting him to explain but all he sees is the nervous expression on his face.
“You do it, Jongin, I can't,” Minseok speaks, his eyes immediately falling downwards when Kyungsoo tries to catch his eye. Kyungsoo shifts his eyes back to Jongin expectedly.
A sigh of defeat escapes Jongin's lips in a puff of air, visible in the natural light at 11 in the morning, “Baekhyun is one of the volunteer elves.”
Kyungsoo freezes at the mention of his name, he peels his eyes away from Jongin and settles his sight on the plain blue sheets Jongin has always had since freshman year. He tries to calm the fire building up within him, tries to will away the memories threatening to come to light in his mind but even Kyungsoo can't fight against the true desires of his heart.
He pushes the tone of nonchalance into his voice as he answers to the tension in the atmosphere in the room at the mention of him, “Alright, so what are your shifts?”
Jongin's lips part in surprise at Kyungsoo's response (as expected) and Minseok replies to Kyungsoo's question in his stead, “he has actually typed it on his phone, I'll text it to you before tomorrow.”
Kyungsoo nods, acknowledging it. He reaches over to ruffle Jongin's dull pink hair, with the brown roots peeking out. He tilts his head at Jongin, letting a smile take over his lips for a while for Jongin, “take care of yourself, Jongin. Don't forget that you owe me a lot for this.”
Jongin blinks against his confusion and moves away from Kyungsoo's touch. He sneezes once, twice, thanks Minseok profusely when the elder passes him another handful of tissues and flits his eyes over to Kyungsoo in curiousity, assessing him. Kyungsoo could feel the growing pace of his heart against his wishes, hoping that it isn't obvious on his features, hoping that he's wearing a look of indifference, hoping that the beating of his heart is merely loud in his ears.
“Don't forget to smile, Kyungsoo! Don't scare the kids away!” Jongin flinches away on instinct as Kyungsoo's hand lifts from his sides to smack his arm. His hand falls as Jongin falls into a fit of giggles, having gotten away with his teasing again. Kyungsoo shakes his head, already biting the insides of his cheeks to stop the laughter from bubbling out of his lips but it's a wasted effort as it mixes with Jongin's laughter and the light snickers coming out of Minseok's lips.
Jongin's expression softens, “Thank you so much for doing this, Kyungsoo. Goo- ” his sentence suddenly breaks off into a cough and Kyungsoo pursues his lips in concern. “If you're trying to wish me luck, there's no use for that,” he says to Jongin, waving away his intent. “You need the luck more than me as I'm going to slaughter you alive after you're well for ruining my Christmas break.”
“Who knows,” Minseok pipes in from the corner after watching the two best friends bicker on the sidelines. “Maybe this Christmas, you will learn to smile even more because of the kids.”
Kyungsoo rolls his eyes and pushes his weight off the bed, gathering his things to leave. His hand is automatically fixing his hair and pushing back his bangs, a scoff spilling out of his mouth, “I won't be too hopeful about that, Minseok.”
Though, a bubble of hope floating in Kyungsoo's chest contradicts the words coming out of his lips.
-
“You're the Santa Clause?!” Kyungsoo almost doubles over in laughter if it wasn't for the tight mint green outfit snug on his body. His eyes flit over Minseok's warm red Santa outfit, his face decked with the fake white-haired beard and glasses. The only thing amiss is the lack of fat Santa Clause has on Minseok's flat stomach, the outfit dangles loosely as it is expected to be worn on a much more grown man.
“Did Jongin not tell you that?” Minseok replies with a hint of indifference in his voice. He scratches absent-mindedly at his wrist and grumbles low under his breath about the poor fabric used for the Santa Clause outfit.
Kyungsoo presses his lips together, trying to sustain the smile from growing into a huge grin, “No, he did not.” He looks downwards at himself. He expected the elf outfit to fit him loosely but to his shock and bad luck, his outfit hugged every curve of his body, making it harder for him to breathe and move around. He pulls on his sleeve, feeling the tightness of the fabric around his elbow threatening to tear a hole.
“Looking good, Do Kyungsoo,” a voice pipes up from behind, sounding all too familiar and too reminiscent of Kyungsoo's nightmares and dreams combined. He turns slowly, fearing the worst and it comes in the form of a slightly taller male with a silver mop of hair donning his head, bangs falling into his eyes as he stares into Kyungsoo's eyes with a slight intensity that Kyungsoo is breathless from. He's a familiar face, a face Kyungsoo has been avoiding on campus and getting a few seconds sneak peek of around the corners when his plan to avoid him fails. A face that even after years of avoidance would haunt Kyungsoo's mind.
Byun Baekhyun. It has been almost a year since Kyungsoo has been this up close seeing him, the memories are flooding his line of vision, getting him dizzy from the bitter taste of nostalgia on his tongue. The light smirk along the curl of his lips, the brightness (too bright for noon, in Kyungsoo's opinion) in his deep set of brown irises, the very same jawline that Kyungsoo remembers peppering kisse-
He shakes his head to himself, he can't let allow Baekhyun get to him this way. He has spent almost an entire year building up this mask of indifference towards Baekhyun, it's not about to be fruitless just by a first meeting after their... encounter at Chanyeol's party. Kyungsoo feels his fingers curling into a ball by his sides, tries to calm the pace of his heart. And he does try to do so desperately.
Kyungsoo's eyes run over Baekhyun's figure on instinct and it's almost unfair how the exact same elf outfit looks this good on him, bringing out the colour in his cheeks and the pinkness of his lips. His odd silver hair adds an ethereal touch to him, definitely standing out in the line of the other elves.
Baekhyun seems to always stand out in a crowd anyway, with the loud booming laughter of his and the light that beams from the crinkles of his eyes.
Kyungsoo scrunches his nose slightly, lets his eyes settle on a spot behind Baekhyun's shoulder, “Nice to see you too, Byun.”
Baekhyun raises an eyebrow at the sudden change of name terms between them. The smirk deepens and Kyungsoo's fingers itch to slap his cheek or land a punch on that pretty face of his.
“I haven't seen you in a year despite us running in the same circle of friends and going to the same college,” Baekhyun remarks, the glint of mischief sparkling in his eyes, something that Kyungsoo always fears. “I wonder why,” he continues with the same tone of cheekiness found in his voice.
Kyungsoo feels the touch on his shoulder and he turns slightly to see Minseok pushing him forward in the direction of the door.
“You should go see Junmyeon, he'll tell you how things work around here,” Minseok advises Kyungsoo, tightening his hold on him, pushing him further. Kyungsoo stumbles on his two left feet, feeling the burn of Baekhyun's stare on his back. He hears the light rambling coming out of Baekhyun's mouth when he walks a little further, towards the door.
“You got to have some belly!” Baekhyun.
A grumble, “That's a stereotype. Why can't Santa be a fit man?”
A sound of exasperation, Baekhyun's voice ringing into Kyungsoo's ears despite the distance his feet has piled on between them. “Just grab a damn pillow and stuff it into your outfit! Kids want to feel soft belly fat, not rock hard abs!”
Kyungsoo stifles his laughter, pressing down on the handle of the door. He closes it behind him with a soft thud and he falls backwards onto the door frame, his head hitting the wooden frame. Kyungsoo closes his eyes, letting a whoosh of air out, feeling the tension seeping out of his bones for now.
Just for now.
-
Kyungsoo's eardrums are pretty much damaged at this point.
It's an hour till the end of his shift and his right hand is aching but he can't switch the heavy bell to his left hand as it's suffering its own pain as well. The elves have been blasting Christmas traditional songs all day with the occasional replay of 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'. His eardrums are screaming for help when the other elves decide to sing along, filling the mall with their unsynchronised harmony. He could see Minseok almost glaring holes into the hats on the other elves, casting a death wish on them undoubtedly. Kyungsoo merely takes a deep breath, inhaling the scent of the candy canes and the heavy cologne coming out from the perfume booth a few inches away. He shakes out the pain in his right wrist and continues to keep ringing the bells, the smile on his face beginning to look like a grimace with every second passing.
“You look like you need a candy cane,” Kyungsoo doesn't even bother to turn, instead, he feels the presence creeps up next to him, the voice wafting into his ears like an old friend. Yet, his eyes betray him, rolling to his right where Baekhyun stands in the same outfit but instead of ringing bells, he's sucking on the end of a candy cane.
He catches Kyungsoo's eye and holds out the very same candy cane to him, expecting Kyungsoo to suck on the other end where it curls inwards to make a cane. Kyungsoo shakes his head at Baekhyun, his throat dry from watching Baekhyun's tongue swirls around the candy, biting on it a bit and sucking on it like it's his life source.
Baekhyun shrugs like he expected that answer from Kyungsoo. He leaves the candy cane hanging on the edge on his mouth, held back by his teeth sunken on it. Kyungsoo watches distractedly as Baekhyun reaches into his pockets and pulls out a packet of something unknown. Kyungsoo realises when Baekhyun holds it up for him to see that it's a packet of gummy bears, the ones the candy booth is selling.
“Some gummies instead?” Baekhyun mumbles around the candy cane in his mouth and he tears the packet apart, pulling out a gummy bear to offer it to Kyungsoo. He takes it from Baekhyun, popping it into his mouth, feeling the sweetness overwhelm his senses momentarily for a few seconds.
Kyungsoo chews on it, casting his eyes away from Baekhyun's gaze, “Thanks.”
Baekhyun peruses him for a few seconds but it feels like millennium, the gaze burning on Kyungsoo's skin, sparking off unsettled emotions in his heart that he has been avoiding for months now. It's unfair, truly unfair, how it's only the first day and Baekhyun is not even doing anything much but his heart is racing against his wishes, making him feel the things he has been pushing into the littlest corner of his heart.
Kyungsoo flinches away when Baekhyun leans in but the latter merely moves closer to him, his fingers curling around the elbow sleeve of Kyungsoo's right arm. Baekhyun pulls him towards him, Kyungsoo stumbling a little on his heels like the clumsy little elf he is. Kyungsoo parts his lips to say something, to stop Baekhyun's antics, to stop himself from doing something incredibly stupid but he feels Baekhyun's fingers slipping into his pocket, placing something there and then leaving his side with a cold chiller than the winter.
Baekhyun pats Kyungsoo's pockets, a small smile on his lips, “there you go.” His eyes flick upwards to meet the confusion lingering in Kyungsoo's eyes, the smile grows wider, “A packet of gummy bears to satisfy your sweet cravings.”
As Kyungsoo's gaze lifts from where Baekhyun's hand lies, patting his pockets, to the unreadable emotions hidden in Baekhyun's eyes, he feels his heart skip over a beat or two, feels himself weakening once more. And he realises the loss of sweetness on the tip of his tongue is satisfied by the boy he's been trying to avoid for a year now.
The sweet honeyed vocals of Mariah Carey drift into his ears and Kyungsoo takes a step back automatically, his walls already coming up protectively on instinct. There's a wave of hurt flashing in Baekhyun's eyes that made Kyungsoo turn away immediately to stop himself from submitting once more. Kyungsoo wants to say his thanks for the sweets in his pocket, a weight that feels more like a burden than anything else, but his feet move on their own, putting distance between him and Baekhyun.
The smiles of joy plastered on every kid's face meeting Santa don't ease the weight in Kyungsoo's heart. No matter how wide his grin is, no matter how hard he try, the feelings he harbour bring the Christmas spirit down in him.
And Kyungsoo closes his eyes for a second, wishing for Jongin's speedy recovery and for those feelings sitting in his heart to disappear.

Chanyeol thought it would be appropriate to throw a party two weeks before Christmas and call it a Christmas slash Sehun's Leaving Party. The decorations were messy, clearly half-assed just like everything Chanyeol does. Luckily for him, Sehun never cares about these things. He was sentimental enough by the thought of his boyfriend throwing him a party before he leaves for a year in Canada for an internship.
Kyungsoo wouldn't have attended if it wasn't for Baekhyun (and Chanyeol) in all honesty. He was already planning on sending Sehun off at the airport and he wasn't up for a party, he never is but that wasn't the point.
“It'll be fun!” Baekhyun had said, pulling on Kyungsoo's arm, pleading him by widening his brown irises at Kyungsoo. He wasn't unfamiliar with Baekhyun's puppy eyes, but that didn't mean he was immune to it. Baekhyun tilted his head at Kyungsoo, a pout naturally taking form on his pink bow mouth. “You wouldn't leave me all alone at a party, would you?”
That was how Kyungsoo found himself at Chanyeol's place in a party unsurprisingly similar to a frat party during the heat of the summer.
The cool condensation from the cup of beer was making his hand slippery and Kyungsoo settled it on a kitchen counter, ready to be forgotten as he made his way through the crowd. A few close friends, my ass, Kyungsoo chided silently in his head as he looked around the living room at all of the people Chanyeol had gathered tonight for the party. He was pretty sure half of them didn't even know what the party was for and merely went along for the promise of beer.
Kyungsoo already lost Baekhyun ten minutes into the party so he had been hanging out around the kitchen area, making small conversations with some people he recognised from the classes he had. He pushed the dangling tacky Christmas decorations Chanyeol had hung around the living room as it drooped slightly from the ceiling. His eyes were automatically scanning every face he saw, hoping to see Baekhyun somewhere.
“Looking for someone?” Kyungsoo swivelled his head around to see Sehun's eyes staring into him while he took a sip from the beer can.
Kyungsoo scrunched his nose from the smell, he knew the same smell was lingering in his breath as well but it wasn't as strong as Sehun's breath. His eyes wandered to the back, behind Sehun's shoulder, still scanning, still searching. “I lost Baekhyun half an hour ago, have you seen him around?”
Sehun nodded at the entrance to the patio in the back, “Probably drowning himself in the alcohol.”
“I better go then,” Kyungsoo merely replied, his feet already moving towards the patio but Sehun's voice startled him momentarily, his steps stuttered for a second from the underlying meaning of Sehun's words.
“Good luck, Kyungsoo!” and if he turned around for a last look at Sehun, he knew the younger would be winking at him with all of the shamelessness shown in his voice.
Kyungsoo shook his head, he was just adding meanings to things that probably didn't mean a thing at all. Yet he stood at the foot of the entrance, staring at a boy sitting on the steps, a bottle of beer in hand and brown hair all messy from his habit of running his hands through it most likely.
“Is this why you asked me to accompany you to the party?” Kyungsoo settled himself down next to Baekhyun on the steps. The boy turned to him with surprise fleeting over his face for a second before softening into a droopy expression and a small smile on his face. Kyungsoo's heart skipped a beat before he could even process a thought properly. “You just want me to take care of you after you drink over your limit, don't you?”
Baekhyun snuggled closer into Kyungsoo's space, leaning his head on Kyungsoo's arm, his nose nuzzling the soft green sweater Kyungsoo had on. He tried to calm his heart a multiple times before, Baekhyun was merely being himself, all touchy and craving for the slightest touch of another human being next to him like a koala in winter.
“You're always taking care of me even when I don't deserve it,” Baekhyun whimpered out of the cold and Kyungsoo could feel the chills running down spine despite being in warm clothing. The boy hugging on to him flitted his eyes upwards, eyelids drooping low, tiny eyelashes almost touching the tips of his cheeks. “I don't deserve you at all, Kyungsoo.”
That was when Kyungsoo's heart ran out of track and Baekhyun closed the distance between them, slanting his lips over Kyungsoo's in a life-changing moment. His lips moved ungracefully, exactly like a person drunk off the adrenaline rush in the alcohol, and Kyungsoo tensed visibly, unable to move. Slowly and eventually, his lips moved against Baekhyun's and the latter let out a sigh, deepening the kiss and moving his hand upwards to cup Kyungsoo's face.
The bottle of beer in Baekhyun's other hand let loose and Kyungsoo's eyes snapped open as the cold reality washed over him bitterly like the taste of beer on Baekhyun's tongue.
He pushed the boy away, Baekhyun's eyes were still closed but a whine slipped out of those bruised swollen lips. Kyungsoo couldn't even lift his head, he muttered an apology and ran into the house, past the crowd, past Chanyeol's look of worry, far away from his fears.
His heart was racing but it wasn't from the speed of his feet on the pavements, but from the taste of Baekhyun lingering on his tongue and the feeling of his lips against Kyungsoo's.
-
“You do know that you can't blame him for what happened, right?” Minseok casually slips into their conversation as they munch on the snacks they bought after their last shift. Kyungsoo almost chokes on his chocolate biscuit, eyes moving upwards to meet Minseok's in surprise.
“Baekhyun had no idea of your feelings and he was drunk,” Minseok reasons, continuing with his lecture. Kyungsoo looks away, sulking slightly because he wasn't expecting such a comment from Minseok. If he had gotten this from Jongin, he would have understood but all Jongin did was accompanied him through the days after the party and brought him lots of Chinese food takeaways from Kyungsoo's favourite Chinese restaurant. There was almost always a rerun of Friends everyday to keep Kyungsoo's mind off the kiss but it was always an effort wasted. Baekhyun existed to live on his mind always.
“That's no excuse for what he did,” Kyungsoo bitterly answers. He puts down the biscuits, feeling his appetite go away.
“Still,” Minseok's voice softens as he turns to land his eyes on Kyungsoo in understanding. “You avoided him for a year afterwards. How do you think you made him feel, Kyungsoo?”
“Baekhyun's confused and he misses his Kyungsoo.”
-
“Go for it, Kyungsoo,” Jongin's voice drifts through the phone from the other end. Kyungsoo could only sigh out of exhaustion from all of the shifts he had to endure for Jongin's sake. The Christmas tree is lit up in the apartment across and Kyungsoo's living room is drowned in the darkness with the lack of Christmas decorations.
Santa would be immensely disappointed in him this year. Just like always.
“It's Christmas soon,” Jongin says, wisdom slipping into his voice. “If miracles don't happen, then you'll make them happen.”
“When did you get this wise?” Kyungsoo bitterly asks, the hot chocolate isn't helping. He would have a cup of coffee but his headache isn't ready for the bitter taste of black coffee.
“Sleeping with Minseok helps a ton,” Jongin bluntly answers Kyungsoo's question and a huge booming laugh follows with a blush sporting Kyungsoo's cheeks in humiliation at his best friend's cheek. He sputters out of surprise, “Disgusting!”
Kyungsoo's eyes watch the life outside of his window in wonderment, and gasps, “It's snowing!”
He could only hear the smile in Jongin's voice, “Merry Christmas.”
-
“Are you Mr. Baekhyun?” the boy swivels his head around, only to lower his gaze to a little girl looking up at him with a set of wide green eyes.
He nods, momentarily distracted, and the little girl grins, the entire smile taking over her small face and she turns around to the group of kids behind her. She gestures to them, waving them over, and they rush over with adorable Santa hats sitting on their heads and smiles mirroring the little girl's on their lips.
They stand in a crowd and part their lips to sing in a harmonious melody of 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'. Their vocals wade into Baekhyun's ears, shocking him and he takes a step back, taking it all in. The sight of the children with their eyes closed and singing the lyrics of the romantic melodic song. His eyes wander all over the elves, watching them stifle their giggles and 'aww's' at the romantic gesture.
Baekhyun's eyes land on a certain black-haired elf amidst the elves with a nervous look settling over his features. His teeth is sunken down on his bottom lip and his eyes are widened, doe-eyed like Baekhyun has always known him. He waits until Kyungsoo's eyes lift to meet his gaze and he feels the pull towards him, feet moving towards the elf. The kids' melodic voices are still loud and echoing in Baekhyun's eardrums but all he could see is Kyungsoo.
A nervous smile blossoms on Kyungsoo's heart-shaped lips, Baekhyun's heart soars slightly. “Merry Christmas?” he greets, unsure and a little feared.
Baekhyun's laugh bubbles out his throat and he pulls Kyungsoo in towards him. His hands settle on Kyungsoo's arms, and there's a sparkle of something glinting in his irises as he stares at Kyungsoo in amazement.
“I wasn't aware that you are capable of such romantic gestures, Do Kyungsoo,” Baekhyun teases, tilting his head at the black-haired elf. The smile grows wider, the happiness in his heart about to take over his entire being.
“Does this mean I'm forgiven of my stupidity?” Kyungsoo asks, the tone of playfulness seeping into his voice and Baekhyun almost wants to pepper his face with kisses because how could he simply say no to a boy who has full ownership of his heart?
“If only your apology comes with a kiss,” Baekhyun's voice droops low teasingly and he really didn't need an answer as he's already leaning in towards Kyungsoo, lips ghosting over heart-shaped ones.
And Baekhyun tastes the familiar taste of mint candy canes on Kyungsoo's tongue, the ones he favoured so much.
