"All right, fair enough," Aseena said. "But... 'DAMN I'M GOOD'?"
*dies laughing*
"I have been responsible for your physical protection on numerous assignments," Rinabaar said. "I have no intention of depriving you of that protection when you may need it the most."
Awww. *heart melts*
"And I'm... pretty much completely useless," Jalon said cheerfully. "But I can tag along and look very pretty doing it."*laughs, rolls off chair
( ... )
*bows* Thank you, thank you! :D I'm glad you liked the story. I kind of enjoyed it too - more than anything I have written since FomF, to be honest.
Perhaps I'll manage FebWriMo this year. :) I have this idea for a secret society of meddling psychics, and a Demesne heading for destruction at the hands of a well-meaning but misguided leader...
I didn't even know that FebWriMo existed! :) A story on meddling psychics sounds fascinating. I think you'll turn it into something worth reading for sure.
It's a bit of a private tradition of mine, but I keep dragging some of my friends into it. ;) We'll see. Right now I'm feeling sort of beat, but I'm working on a short story at the moment. If I can manage to finish that one, perhaps I can dare tackle something more ambitious.
I laughed out loud when Jalon was like "AH NO I'm not He Who Comes, promise! ^_^;;" and then again when Aseena was like: "really? Did you have to destroy the floor we were standing on?"; "*hardly anyone* wants to strangle you" and "Damn I'm good? Really, Dara?". And when Jalon was like "I'm ... pretty much completely useless! But I'm very handsome!".
It's such a nice note to end on, that they're all going to stay as a team and support each other and 'make sure the world stays saved'. That's perfect.
I loved this story! It's been a fun ride, with excellent pacing and combination of character-building and action. The Shadowed Citadel is a cool Demesne, you did some excellent world-building, it's all very Gothic and awesome. And I loved, loved all the characters. Every single one was strong and flawed, passionate and vulnerable.
CONGRATULATIONS on finishing! :) :) :) It's brilliant!
And when Jalon was like "I'm ... pretty much completely useless! But I'm very handsome!".
Have you ever seen a British sci-fi comedy series called Red Dwarf? It has one episode where the heroes face a time-traveling android who confronts people and tells them to "justify themselves" - basically, argue that they have done something worthwhile with their lives. If they can't, he erases them from the timeline.
And this one character is really amazingly vain and selfish...
ANDROID: "JUSTIFY YOURSELF! What of value do you bring to the universe?" CHARACTER: "Well... I have a great ass." ANDROID: "True. What else?" CHARACTER: "That's it." ANDROID: "That's all?" CHARACTER: "Yes. *beams* But it's a really great ass!"
(he gets away with it, too. The android, to avoid bias, judges everyone based on their own criteria of "value" - and this character honestly believes that looking as pretty as him constitutes a major service to the cosmos. ;) )
