Direct TV and the suckiness of suckdom

About two years ago I got Direct TV because I wanted the tivo service you could get cheap and I was tired of the cable company. Two years have passed and apparently Direct TV no longer is doing deals with TiVO. I found this out because I can no longer get the old box ( Read more... )

Our friend Kevin was just mentioning last night that the "buzz" is that DirectTV has just bought the rights to upgrade their TiVo models to include the latest TiVo software, which had been frozen at the time when DirectTV and TiVo parted ways a while ago. This is apparently a big deal to people that own his particular model of DirectTV TiVo box. I don't know how to force DirectTV to give you a real TiVo rather than the knockoff. Our cable company (Charter) provides some crappy Scientific Atlanta DVRs that are not nearly as good, from what I hear from my TiVo-loving friends... I certainly find it pretty annoying. We've been talking about building a media PC to run MythTV, but we're kinda weird that way... and by all accounts TiVo is the way to go if you don't want to write code yourself... (the advantage of MythTV is that if it doesn't work the way you want, you can change how it works. The disadvantage is that you probably have to... Of course, the fact that you're guaranteed that it won't store your data in some weird proprietary ( ... )
