I think that "Frankenstein" was probably the better of these two, but then again I haven't seen Dracula. All I know is that De Niro as the Creature + Branagh as Victor Frankenstein= WIN.
Honestly, it was a mixed bag. It had some redeeming features in the way that they pictured the creature, and how they kept much of the original narrative structure (ie a story within a story within a letter to a completely unrelated person) And it's got some cute Creature-trying-to-be-Good stuff. I enjoyed it for a certain level of fangirlishness, and I thought it was cute. I don't claim it to be the stuff of great film.
On vaguely related Oldman note, the last thing I saw him in was "Leon, the Professiona," where he's scary and psychotic and threatens children and his drug-running employees as a very nasty cop. There are several extended scenes him threatening an 11-year-old girl- really chilling stuff.
Segue now to Oldman playing *Commisioner Gordon* attempting to cuddle and comfort the poor little rich Bruce Wayne who just saw his parents killed. Again, as a cop. I think my brain went up in smoke.
I used to have a Literature and Social Reform lecturer who looked just like Gary Oldman. He used to say random lines out of Oldman's movies when things got dull, and then look around the room going "Eh? Eh?" God he was an annoying bastard!
I liked the books of Frankenstein and Dracula about the same level, but I like the film of Frankenstein less than the book and the film of Dracula more than the book. I guess that means I like the movie of Dracula more, but it wasn't all that great. To be perfectly honest, I prefer the kinda lame slash version :D
