In January 1993, I drove out to graduate school in Lubbock, TX from Maine. Lubbock had 2 feet of snow on the ground compared to central Maine's 2 inches at the time. Oh, and I drove through a snowstorm/blizzard between central Oklahoma and Amarillo, TX at the time. I didn't notice any problems other than there was no one else on I-40 in either direction for the entire afternoon between Oklahoma City and Amarillo. When I slowly pulled off the interstate in Amarillo and into the motel parking lot, there was 2 inches of ice crusted on the front grill of my Impala station wagon. Apparently, the highway had been shut down earlier in the day from OKC all the way to Albuquerque, but it didn't occur to the authorities to force anyone on the highway off it, just close-down all the on-ramps. I guess they didn't expect some "Damn Yankee", who is use to driving in such conditions, to be on the highway. Either that or the local authorities didn't dare to try and chase me off. :)
