I still haven't gotten around to watching the Henry parts of this series. The first episode (Richard 2nd) was really good though, and I don't see why you should be ashamed of liking him best. He is a mighty interesting character too!

Many people think Richard II is one of Shakespeare's weaker plays, or boring, or something. Derek Jacobi thinks it wasn't even written by Shakespeare, but if I remember correctly, Derek Jacobi doesn't think Shakespeare was Shakespeare, so whatever. The Hollow Crown cut some of the more boring bits (for example I think the tourney/duel scene is a lot longer, and there are more scenes that don't have Richard in them in the original) to great effect.

Man I thought that was like, an atrocious Henry IV and V with no sense of fun and basically like, a wet flop everywhere there should have been a good line/scene. WORST directing of decent actors ever! Doesn't even feel like the same plays to me.

I mean I wouldn't have minded so much if the characters didn't come off so much poorer for it?

Well, no, "fun" isn't an adjective I'd use, either (it was all rather grim and serious, but I like grim), and I think that the cinematography in Henry IV+ V was a bit dull, compared to Richard II, so maybe there are other reasons aside from Richard being one of my favourites that I liked the first part best.

Yeah, but it's not even that they've grimmed it's just--I don't even know how to explain how poor some of the choices were? Like the serious scenes didn't ring properly for me, either in accord with the text as I read it or as I saw it? It was like--like a really comic book reboot of something you usually love, where it's not an issue of fixing the mistakes so much as scrapping it and starting over.

If you ever want Richard II fic recs, just say the word. The Histories fandom is pretty amazing. :)

The Word! I am saying it!

I know the fics on the Yuletide Archive and AO3 but I wouldn't know where else to look, so recs would be more than welcome.

So, here's a list of ALL the histories fic EVER.

I particularly recommend anything by Gileonnen. She's an amazing writer and I feel her style would appeal to you.

As far as specific recs go, this fic is probably the classic of the fandom. It's the work of two acafans, and it shows.

Have fun!
