Today I found
literally on my doorstep, and I nearly trampled on him as I was going out to walk the dog. At first I thought it was a snake, but after peering more closely I realised it was actually a slow worm -slow being the operative word since it was quite sluggish. It struck the pose long enough to allow me to tie Tom to the radiator in the hall (an indignity he complained loudly about), grab my camera and take a couple photos. Then it proceeded to retreat at a stately pace to its dwelling, which appears to be situated under the thujas that serve as a fence between our garden and the neighbour's. Slow worms aren't uncommon here in Switzerland, but it's the first time I have one in my garden, and I hope he'll stay for a while and eat the slugs that eat my salads. I'm sure he'll be a very useful tenant, and a much more pleasant neighbour than the human one I'm cursed with!:)
