Hi. I'm replying here since for some reason I can't reply to your "The Letter" story, either here or on atgstories. I thought it was an interesting idea, and very well-written! I believe Alexander was still a known figure in Europe during that time period, although he was frequently held up as a person with many faults. Anyway, I liked your story!

Alexander was known but only through the 'romances' or the 'romance traditions'. Many of the histories in Latin or Greek were kept within the confines of monasteries, where copying was done, or among the privileged classes, like kings, etc. Many upper levels of the Church were aristocratic in background and therefore would have had access to such texts if they bothered to look. Richard I was known for his male lovers, thus the bishops here using Alexander as a 'caution' would be a round-about chastisement...you wouldn't dare outright tell the king that he was going to hell...you would cloak it in warning tales and such. They would have learned from how Richard's father Henry II dealt with St. Thomas Beckett (under debate whether Henry actually wanted Beckett's death or not) that you did not criticize a Plantangenet and expect to just walk ( ... )
