My BoyCat

My black-and-white BoyCat suddenly and unexpectedly went into heart failure today after getting an abscess treated. The emergency vet thinks that the trauma of the treatment exacerbated an underlying unidentified heart condition.

He had lots of fluid in his lungs and had to be sedated and intubated because he was turning blue. They pushed lots of meds to get the fluids out, and he's now been extubated, his lungs sound much better, and he's in an oxygen tent. The vet is pleased with his progress, considering that she thought they were going to lose him, but is adamant that he is nowhere near out of the woods and could go downhill at any moment.

He's currently at the emergency vet and will stay there until the morning, if he makes it that long. They'll call me tonight if he takes a turn for the worse. Even if he makes it out of the emergency vet and survives the next couple of days, the vet says he'll probably live only a couple of months.

I've had this cat since he was five weeks old, part of a litter I was fostering. He's only eight years old. I shouldn't have a favorite among my cats, but I do--and it's him. He's so full of personality and so affectionate. He sleeps on the bed every night, usually next to my pillow, and his purr helps me get to sleep. He licks my nose in the morning.

He's only eight years old. He's supposed to live another eight years, dammit.

If you can spare some kind thoughts or prayers for him, I'd be grateful. Thank you.
