Your hearing experience was quite interesting for me. I suffer from age-related hearing impairment, I think, where when in a noisy environment I find it difficult to hear what the person I'm talking to is saying. I rely on visual cues and (I suppose) partial lipreading to figure out what s/he is saying. In a pitch-black room, there is no visual cue so I would be unable to understand what people might be saying to me. So your experience resonates with me.
There are restaurants all over the world that duplicate this eating in the darkness experience. It sounds like it was interesting but I think I would be a bit out-of-my-depth there.
It was kind of like a sauna darkroom for food, I would guess.
