The Golden Compass was a fun book, and soon to become a movie. One of the neat things about the world were the Daemons, literal representations of your soul outside your body. These critters changed shape constantly as you grew up, and eventually fixed on a shape that best suited your personality. They were like a witch's familiar, only everyone ( Read more... )

I really liked the Golden Compass -- I remember reading it when it first came out, before the series was a big hit.

Then I was soundly disappointed by the following books.

Also, your daemon is now a rabbit...

Yeah, the Golden Compass was a great book. A wonderful world with colorful characters and the crazy Aelthiometer.

Then, Subtle Knife was less interesting as people from our world started colliding with her world. The final book was a disaster. Sigh.

Rabbit? Black cat, now. Better than the tweety bird, I think.
