Things continue to plod along and I'm beginning to feel the time crunch. I think I've tentatively worked out topics for my essays (something regarding HK cinema's influence on western cinema or something. Maybe focusing on Tarantino. They screened a print of Nobi down here about a month ago, I was pretty blown away. Have you seen any of the anime stuff he's directed?

Is that "Fires On the Plain" in any way related to the novel of the same name by Ooka Shohei? Because ironically, I just read that about a month or two ago for class.

I know this is probably a silly lowly source for Intro to Cinema students, but we're studying HK cinema this week and our reading assignment was the first chapter of Planet Hong Kong by David Bordwell. I don't have access to anything online besides the first chapter, and with a title like that you've probably already come across it, but the chapter does compare a lot of HK characteristics to western cinema. There isn't a lot about martial arts films in the first chapter, but it sounds like there is more later in the book. If you haven't read/heard of it I can get you onto UGA course reserves to decide if its worth finding a full copy of...
