Jo Rowling has said Hermione was modeled after her and is the character she feels closest to. It's interesting to re-read the books from that perspective, especially after reading a few (only half-joking) articles about how the books really should be called "Hermione Granger and that One Time She Saved Harry Potter's Ass" or some-such

i am, in fact, coming perilously close to self-publishing one of my books. lara was kind enough to make up some cover art for me that looks fantastic. akiva is currently reading it (has read it) and will give me notes, and my parents have read it and given me some notes. i need to re-write the ending a bit, and not sure what all akiva's notes will lead to, but yes. i figure fuck the publishing companies. i've tried the literary agent query thing, nada, and small publishing houses just ask you what you're planning to do to market your book. it's like fuck you, that's what i'm talking to you for. what do i need a publisher for if i'm the one expected to do the marketing? even the big houses, i've heard, don't do squat for new or small authors
