Code Words in LARP

Mar 20, 2011 21:11

This is some idle theory garble about LARPing, so feel free to move along if it doesn't interest you. I've tried to make it intelligible to non-larping folk.

Just so you won't feel like you've wasted your time, here's a picture of a cow I made.

"In fact, some of the people I play with have gone so far as to create an additional code phrase to convey the following"

What's the additional phrase?

I am hesitant to post what it is here, because the person who came up with it is worried that hearing it will snap people out of game if lots of people know what it is. But I will message it to you on LJ.

If anyone else is just dying to know, ask me privately

Totally understood!

As a rule, I'm pretty pro-code phrases. I like them as expressions of comfort or discomfort, kill phrases, and just because codes are cool. :-)

In Madrigal there is actually something that people use which is that they have 'the plague'. This is a way for people to say, "I would totally go on that module IG, but OOG I'm too exhausted and I don't want you to make me feel bad IG that I am letting you down or anything like that."

In Endgame people can use the phrase, "May I speak frankly?" in order to convey things OOG. This allows players to refuse to do so, leave the area if it is a problem, or actually understand that the conversation is going to be OOG.

Be well.

Oh that's right, I totally forgot about "the Plague"!
I like the idea of "May I speak frankly." It avoids those situations where someone says "Hey, mind if I break game for a moment?" and the only possible response is "Well, you just did."

At times, it can be handy for late-night decompress in the cabin, too.

It usually proceeds something very silly. :D

Late night decompress can also happen IG around the fire in the tavern after a hell grind at 4-5 a. m.? :D

Be well.

Having seen you needle-felting, I am unable to accept any other names; To me, what you call Hamish is "Stabby the Cow."

Hey pbsweetheart, remember when we were talking about stuff that could be ported across games without drastic weirdness? Does this kind of stuff apply?

These things would be VERY welcome in any gaming world I'm in. :) Didn't think about these, but they have been life savers in Madrigal, especially the plague and clarification. I am also a huge fan of having a code word, but I'm not sure it would work as a core rule to a game. I think it's best suited for a PC level of use.

Good to know :3

Which code word are you saying would best be kept to PC use? The "Let me in on this" one?
If so, I'm prone to agree with you- it was intended for use among a limited group of players who all basically trust one another IG and OOG, and I think it works well that way.

If there were to be a "let me out of this" code, I feel like that's something that would only really work if everyone on site knew what it was.

Yes, exactly!

I guess I'm having a hard time figuring out when this would be different than the plague. Could you give me an example of when a PC would use the "let me out of this" code word.
