I read this post after rooting through my desk drawer in hunger and finding two snack options: weird Halloween candy or a packet of BBQ sauce. FUUUU.
This sounds like an amazing meal though. Beyond amazing. I lived just south of the Tajima area and wagyu cattle were raised outside my town. So while the ultra high-quality wagyu went to restaurants and all over the world, the Joe Average beef (which was still pretty amazing) was easily pick-up-apple at the butcher.
Tonkatsu is a breaded pork cutlet, and the brownish sauce is usually served with it. Haven't had it with beef!
I have some process questions. (And I feel like I...maybe have asked these at some point in the past? I dunno, my brain is pretty mushy these days.)
1. How long did this meal TAKE? I've never had anything like an actual fancy nine-course dinner at a restaurant. I don't even know how it works. 2. Do they pick everything for you or do you make some selections from, say, a couple of options? 3. Do you take notes while you eat? I think you said once you refer to online menus when you're doing your food write-ups, but I have this vision of you with a pen-light and it makes me happy.
I have nothing else to say except that i want to eat everything in the entire world after eating this. And the last paragraph made me happy.
1. 2.5 hours. Our reservation was for 6:30 PM and we left at 9 PM. 2. Pretty much they just pick for you, but they take into account your allergies and preferences. For example, Aaron let them know he is allergic to fresh water snails. I mentioned that I do not prefer to eat an egg by itself, though I don't mind if egg is an ingredient. They were nice about those. Now, I will say that Aaron mentioned he does not prefer clam as sushi and they definitely gave us clam sashimi but it was delicious so it was okay. Sometimes Morimoto knows best. 3. I took notes the first time we went to Morimoto (for our first anniversary dinner) and the server noticed and let us in on a secret: they are happy to print up a menu for us! So I basically go on that. If we are out somewhere I can't count on a post-meal printout, I will definitely take notes. (I also take notes when I watch Project Runway, etc.)
I like that you were so preoccupied with food that you wrote eat twice in your penultimate sentence.
Oh my god, this is what my food budget is doing to me. It's like that scene in Girl, Interrupted where Brittany Murphy, RIP, keeps talking about her eat-in chicken.
The moral of the story, Meg, is keep going to fancy restaurants and posting reviews for the rest of us.

I am so glad you cleared up the Tonkatsu question. They said it was the sauce... it was really lovely.
