This one ends with such a positive note! This piece makes me really understand what it's like to go away to college. I never did that and from the outside it look like such an adventure.. but you described here (and brilliantly!) how scary it can be. I can also relate to that feeling of finally being accepted and claimed as one of the group's own. That really is one of the best feelings in the world. Thank you for this piece. It really adds something special to this week's contest!
I started college close to home, so I never got that going-away-to-college anxiety, but I did just move across the country to finish college this past December, and I know that anxious feeling well. I'm glad things turned out okay for you!
I know so many people that have a hard time adjusting to new places once they go away to college, so I'm glad you found a good group of friends to start you off. That first night always sets the tone.
luckily the older students in my res made a great effort to make us new kids feel welcome. it was still a steep learning curve to learn that kind of independence, but I think that community was the best one I could've been in to get used to living away from home for the first time.
