The Adventure of the Copper Beeches - Discussion Post

Dec 13, 2010 20:50

This week, Holmes offered his services to a lady, Watson shoots a dog, and there are some unsettling demands made at a young lady's audition.

DISCUSS.

"Seriously, what is it with these incredibly tall women?"

1. What did you think of Miss Violet Hunter? Sassy junior detective, or kind of slow on the uptake?

2. What role do you think social class plays in this story? Or is it totally irrelevant?

3. I'm going to go with the assumption pretty much everyone has encountered some kind of adaptation of Hound of the Baskervilles. Do you think there are some similarities between this story and Hound? What's the significance of the similarities and/or differences?

4. Watson seems to be trying to pair off Holmes and Violet, not just at the end, but in his descriptions of their interaction. What do you think? Cute couple or a good time to ask what was Watson thinking? What was Watson thinking?

5. What do you make of Holmes' reaction to Watson's writing? Has it improved since Sign of Four? Is there any commentary on the Holmes stories here, or is it just Holmes being himself?

Any further thoughts are welcome!
