Silver Blaze - Discussion Post

This week, Holmes went to see a man about a horse, there is a curious incident with a dog in the night-time, and a certain hat gets dug out of the closet. Whether or not Watson is secretly horrified, the world may never know.

DISCUSS.

Holmes, leaning forward, with his long thin forefinger checking off the points upon the palm of his left hand, gave me a sketch of the events... )

I loved the mysteriousness of this mystery. The way ACD unfolded it absolutely worked for me.

The one quibble I've always had with it, though-- my sister was kicked by her horse once. She had a perfect horseshoe-shaped wound on her forehead, with perfect horseshoe-shaped stitches. I can't see how Silver Blaze could have kicked Straker and not have it be obvious that his hoof was the murder weapon. So I had to work hard to let that go. But the rest of it was brilliant. :)

Okay, I suck, fail and so on, and I was going to say something terribly insightful about the sting of reasoning present in this one (which, if you ever study logic, you will hear about every single time someone mentions reasoning) so in lieu of that, I shall hand over my favourite academic paper on the subject on the QT and get on with my stupidly hectic stupid horrible evil right now life.

For anyone who gives a flying testicle about logical systems and why Holmes does actually do something magical with logic here and there, clicky!
