First Sherlock story to make me cry :D It seems to show the progressive attitude of the time which was emerging slowly from slavery days but it also shows the incredibly rebellious attitude Sherlock and Watson had, considering that black people were very taboo back then.
Oh well haha, I wrote a term paper on Sherlock Holmes last quarter and I read a lot about constructions of race in ACD. So I read and thought about how this story, though it might seem progressive, really betrays a lot of attitudes and anxieties about race and purity/impurity that were held at the time. I will reread this story for the discussion and maybe an article or two so I can be prepared!
I actually would love to read what you have to say on this story, too, if you would be up for sharing. (It's kinda the icon that has me intrigued, as well as general nosiness :P)
