the adventure of the musgrave ritual - discussion post

Ack, I am a bad person and very sorry for the lateness (please don't tell on me? I'll make it short so as not to keep you too long). This week, we have another chapter from Holmes' freshman notebook, some hastily cobbled together history, and a butler.

I just don't think it'll fit, is all I'm saying...

To the discussion:

1. Watson is suddenly incredibly sarcastic. For lack of a better phrase, who pissed in his Cheerios, do you think? Or rather, why is Doyle choosing this moment to point out that Holmes is far from perfect?

2. What do you think of the glimpses we're getting of Holmes as a younger man? Especially, what do you think of this Holmes, as compared to the Holmes in The Gloria Scott? Can you see him developing?

3. Is this bordering on the hard-to-believe, even for a Holmes story?

4. The butler did it, sort of. How does the biggest cliché in mystery fiction strike you in this one?

(I will leave it there because this was very late)
