This week, Holmes has out-of-body experiences, a shoe is stolen, and Watson remains easily impressed.
DISCUSS.
1. What do you make of Holmes' spiritualistic language in chapter three? Is Doyle implying any connection between spiritualism and science? Does a supernatural explanation seem more plausible this way?
2. Do you note anything about the relationship between Holmes and Watson in chapter three? Combined with the opening, what conclusions do you draw about the state of their friendship? How does this relationship jive with, say, The Sign of Four?
3. Do you spot any mystery tropes in chapter four? Which ones? Well used, or not?
4. Now that you've met Sir Henry, can you draw any parallels between the Holmes and Watson duo and Sir Henry and Dr. Mortimer?
5. What do you make of Holmes' "failure" with the cab? Is the incident significant?
Other thoughts always welcome!
