CHARACTER
» Name: Katsuya Suou
» Fandom: Persona 2: Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment
» Reference: http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Katsuya_Suou
» Canon Point: post-Eternal Punishment
» Gender: male
» Age: 25

» Orientation: Somewhat uninterested, but ultimately heterosexual. In-game, several women express interest or admiration towards him, but Katsuya doesn't respond; he's devoted to his job and the investigation, and doesn't spare much time or effort on romance. He is shown to have feelings for Maya, though, as evidenced by the confrontation with his "Shadow" (see last paragraph of personality section), when his Shadow says, "You're in love with that woman," referring to Maya; however, what Shadows say are not entirely true, and the real Katsuya tells Maya later, "Ms. Amano...uh...That was half true and...half...", implying that he does have feelings for her but isn't necessarily "in love." In official artbook "Persona Club III: Eternal Punishment World," it states during a question and answer section that "He's dated some women up until now, but for various reasons, I'm not sure that any of the relationships have worked out."

» Personality:

At first glance, Katsuya Suou is the perfect police officer and man of the law. He's reached the rank of Sergeant, which is a supervisory rank, meaning he's worked hard enough to become promoted at least two times. In the first Persona 2 game, Innocent Sin, in which he's an NPC, he can usually be found in the police station, implying that he spends most of his time there. Even when he's off-duty, traveling with the player party in the second game, Eternal Punishment, he retains the mannerisms of an on-duty officer, saying things such as "Can you apply the penal code to a demon?" or "Police! Everybody freeze!" during battle against demons. In fact, his involvement in the main storyline of Eternal Punishment relied on the fact that he visited Seven Sisters High School while on an official investigation. He takes his job seriously to the point of putting it over his social life; while his co-workers seem to show interest in him, he's never shown to make an effort to interact with them on a social level, nor has he been shown to take much time off to pursue many of his own activities or interests. (His only hobbies shown in-game seem to be making cakes and pastries, a nod to his old dream of becoming a patissier, and playing the flamenco guitar.) Others notice the sheer amount of time he spends working, too - in one scene, a coworker says, "Suou... You rest. you've been working too hard." Katsuya is a respected police officer ("Suou is really a good cop"), but judging by the amount of time and effort he puts into his job, his success relies mostly on perseverance rather than natural skill and intuition in solving cases. During the case shown in-game, he relies on by-the-books police work involving such methods as interrogation, examining evidence and questioning witnesses even in unnatural situations such as when dealing with demons.

Despite working mostly by the books, though, he operates according to his own internal moral compass. He disobeys his superior officer, who had "relieved him of duty," by continuing to work on the "Joker" case; he says, "Don't be absurd... The only officer to see him was me. I WILL be the one to arrest him." That moral compass is very strong, and more often than not, he'll raise issue with something illegal even when he's not obligated to - for example, even when party member Baofu is giving him necessary information about the Joker case (information that also involved a personal issue from Katsuya's past), he says, "How would you know? ...A wire tap? That's illegal." Katsuya also relies strongly on logic. Despite the fact that he is able to use the supernatural power of Persona in order to fight demons, he dismisses the validity of the popular Wang Long fortunetelling system, and he rejects the possibility that rumors become reality (at least until it's proven to him), saying "That's absurd... It's not logical."

Perhaps the most important thing to Katsuya, above logic and law, is his brother Tatsuya. In Innocent Sin, in which the story is told from Tatsuya's point of view, Katsuya is painted as a mean, unfair, and unfeeling person. For example, at one point he tells Tatsuya, "All you ever do is wander around aimlessly. Sometimes I think I can’t have any peace without tying you to a tree or something like that." He also says, "Tatsuya! What the hell are you doing here? Do you want to die? Protecting the citizens is the job of public servants! Hurry up and hide somewhere." At first glance, it appears that he dislikes Tatsuya and doesn't want him around, but in reality, he cares greatly about Tatsuya; he says these things out of concern that Tatsuya will get in trouble, rather than out of selfishness. He even saves a portion of each month's salary for Tatsuya out of his own free will. However, Katsuya does hold some bitterness towards Tatsuya because of their shared past. They grew up as fairly close siblings, but while Tatsuya was still young and Katsuya was a young adult, their father, who was also a police officer, began making progress in an investigation, and began to suspect that the person committing a string of serial arson incidents was the son of a powerful politician. That politician, along with the help of Katsuya's father's best friend, blackmailed Suou Sr. into stepping down from his position on the police force, which greatly shamed the family. Katsuya knew far more about the situation than Tatsuya, who was young and relatively uninformed; Tatsuya held a lot of frustration and anger towards both his father and Katsuya, who he perceived as his father's ally, because of his misinformed assumptions.

In a reaction almost opposite to Tatsuya's, Katsuya took it upon himself to abandon his dreams of becoming a patissier in order to become a police officer, so that he could avenge the harm done to his father and family and restore honor to the family name. While his dedication to being an upstanding member of law enforcement shows that he's serious about helping his family and protecting Tatsuya, he does have some regrets that he wasn't able to pursue his true passion. This comes out most clearly in the altercation with his own "Shadow," a warped supernatural reflection of a person's repressed thoughts. His Shadow says, "Regrets are at an extreme, aren't they? [...] You really despise your father and brother, huh? If not for them, you could've had your way. [...] Your love for your family is just a role." However, Katsuya was able to admit that "What that guy is saying is... partially true, and partially untrue!" He does have some regrets about his path in life, and is sometimes resentful of his father and brother, but he also has a genuine love for both law enforcement and his family - especially Tatsuya - that overrides his negative feelings. In fact, if every party member dies during in-game battle, his last words are "Death in the line of duty? It can't be..." and "Little brother..."

» Appearance: Katsuya stands at 5'10", weighing 143 pounds; he has chestnut brown hair and brown eyes. He wears a gray suit with a red shirt and a black tie, and he keeps his police-issued sidearm in a waist holster. He wears red-tinted glasses as well, but they are necessary for vision correction as opposed to a fashion statement - in a flashback to his high school years, he's wearing normal spectacles.

[The feed opens up to a skyward view; the tops of buildings can be seen around the corners of the frame, along with the noise of someone fumbling with the communicator. In a few jerky motions, the camera is brought down to capture the face of the man holding the device; he's auburn-haired, with tinted glasses and a snappy-looking suit. He looks surprisingly un-disheveled for having been in Atia for only a few hours - after waking up, he took the time to redress, comb his hair and then start out on something of an information-gathering expedition before making his first post to the network.

He's in the marketplace, now, standing out of the way on a street corner - stalls and buildings can be seen in the distance behind him. Katsuya pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose and then addresses the communicator.]

Atia! Suspect #601! You're under arrest for kidnapping and sexual assault; if you don't turn yourself in immediately, you'll also be charged with resisting arrest. Now, if you cooperate with me, we can negotiate with a shorter sentence - but don't try to weasel out of the punishment.

As for the citizens - listen up! I'm Sergeant Katsuya Suou with the Konan Police Department of Sumaru City. [He pauses, here, to flash his badge.] I know being kidnapped is scary, but we're going to have to work together, here. I'd like everyone to give me their names and tell me more about their abductions so I can get a clearer picture of what's going on here. Once I re-establish communication with my superior officers, we'll make sure to get everybody out of here. Until then, stay calm and sit tight.

[Katsuya gives a solemn, stoic nod to the camera before shutting off the feed.]

» "amatomneslogs" Entry:

It's been a long time since Katsuya has been intimate in any capacity; the sensation of waking up naked in someone else's bed is not necessarily entirely unknown to him, but it is alarming - especially because there's no trace of a woman, not even a warm spot in the bed. Katsuya, still hazy with the dregs of deep sleep, pulls himself up into a sitting position. What his body really wants to do is to roll over and go back to sleep, but he's had enough rude awakenings while on duty that he's used to fighting those urges. He can't see much of the room around him without his glasses - all he sees are the vague shapes of the furniture and the bright square of the uncovered window - but what really causes him alarm, more so than his nudity and the remnants of sex, is what he feels around his neck. It's... a necklace of some sorts, as far as he can tell, but even after running his fingers around the width of it he can't find a clasp. Huh. What kind of nonsense...?

Did he let himself drink too much last night, he wonders? He doesn't feel hungover, but he doesn't remember anything past leaving the police station after his shift ended, either. It couldn't be that he was-- assaulted? There's no physical trauma - as far as he can tell he hadn't been knocked out by force - but he doesn't remember eating or drinking anything strange, either. Perhaps an assailant used a rag soaked with chloroform, or another such agent; he had worked on a case like that, he remembers, when he was just a rookie. If someone had really drugged him and had sex with him against his will, though, they'd committed a crime - victim or not, Katsuya is still a police officer, and he needs to uphold justice just like he would were this under any other circumstance.

Covering himself with the sheet, Katsuya slides out of bed, making his way around to the foot of it; even with blurry vision, he can see the familiar pile of clothing, there. The first thing he does is put on his glasses - when he does, though, he sees the view out of the window, and he has to do a double take. He's lived in Sumaru City all his life, and the skyline he sees now is something else entirely. It isn't logical; he couldn't have been drugged, kidnapped, assaulted and transported all within the span of a few hours, could he? Not logical at all. With his eyebrows knit into a frown, he drops the sheet and redresses himself, just like he would at home. His final action is to strap his sidearm into his waist holster. He looks into the mirror simply out of habit - the only thing wrong about his reflection is that damn necklace. He'll work on removing it later, though, he decides - what's important now is to solve this predicament. There's something fishy going on here, and it's up to him to make sense of it all; he'll start by searching for and arresting his assailant. With the facts still swirling in his mind, he opens the door to his room - there's something logical behind all of this confusion, and he's made up his mind to figure it out.
